Twelve years after his album “Italian Virtuosi of the Chitarrone” (BIS-1899), Jakob Lindberg returns to his beautiful theorbo, crafted especially for him by luthier Michael Lowe, based on an original in the Musée de la Musique in Paris. The theorbo, known for its impressive length and many strings, was designed for accompanying the voice but is equally captivating in solo performances. In this album, Lindberg explores works by Robert de Visée, a favorite of Louis XIV and a master of the lute, theorbo, and guitar. The recording includes dances, character pieces like a touching “Plainte” for his late daughters, and de Visée's arrangements of pieces by Lully, Couperin, and Purcell, along with his version of “Les Folies d’Espagne.” Lindberg expresses his admiration for the theorbo's graceful lines, rich sound, and the distinctly French elegance of de Visée's music.
