late 15c., "look over" (implied in supervising), from Medieval Latin supervisus, past participle of supervidere "oversee, inspect," from Latin super "over" (see super-) + videre "to see" (from PIE root *weid- "to see"). The meaning "oversee and have charge of and superintend the work or performance of others" is attested from 1640s.
