Waco, TX (FOX 44) — March is Women’s History Month and we at FOX44 want to highlight Remarkable Women in our community.

Dr. Susan Kincannon knows first-hand the impact a teacher can have on a students life.

“I was at Mark Walker Elementary School and had a phenomenal fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Killingsworth, who was just so special to me,” said Dr. Kincannon. “She made me feel special, and I just connected with her immediately and found out that I was good at learning, it was just a safe place to be. It was the first time in my life where I felt noticed and special.”

Kincanncon grew up in foster care and was adopted by her uncle and aunt who was a teacher in Texas.

Dr. Kincannon went to school in Copperas Cove and felt teaching was her calling.

“I knew I wanted to be an elementary school teacher when I graduated from high school and then would go on to college to do that,” said Dr. Kincannon.

Dr. Kincannon got her teaching degree at UMHB and started off as a elementary school teacher in Temple working her way up to principal.

“I really felt like I could have a greater impact as the principal of the school,” said Dr. Kincannon.

Dr. Kincannon then moved to Belton ISD to some become superintendent.

In 2019, Dr. Kincannon made the move to Waco.

“I was ready for a change and I knew I needed that change,” said Dr. Kincannon. “Waco was open. My daughter was going to Baylor, so I’m familiar with this Central Texas area, so I decided to apply for Waco ISD and I have enjoyed it very much.”

In her time at Waco ISD, Kincannon has built new schools in the district and improved overall instruction.

As superintendent, Dr. Kincannon wants people to know she’s a part of the community working for everyone.

“I want to be approachable. I want to connect with people, and so I very much want people to see me in that light,” said Dr. Kincannon.

Dr. Kincannon says she feels honored to be nominated as a Remarkable Woman and encourages others to follow their heart.

“If you love what you do, you’re going to be happy in the work, and I’ve been very happy in this job,” said Dr. Kincannon.
