Grimsby Town have completed their first signing of the summer, bringing in right-back Tyrell Warren on a free transfer following his release from Barrow.

The 25-year-old has joined the Mariners on a two-year deal as David Artell bolsters his options on the right side of the defence, with Warren also capable of playing at centre-back.

The Manchester-born full-back featured 61 times in total in his two years with the Bluebirds, but he found his game time limited last term in Pete Wild’s team with just 16 league appearances.

Before his time at Barrow, Warren had a year with Halifax Town and was a key part of the team that reached the National League play-offs in the same season Grimsby got promoted out of the fifth tier.

Warren came through the academy at Manchester United, where he featured regularly for their U18 and U23 teams before going out to find his way into professional football elsewhere.

Despite his limited game time for Barrow this season, Warren featured in both games against Town, with Artell being in charge for the second meeting where he got to see his first summer addition up close.

The club see the potential to develop Warren further as they build on what the player has learned from the varied experiences he has had so far in his career, with his next stop being Blundell Park.

Artell said in the club’s official release: “We’re delighted, we’ve moved quickly to get it done. He’s got an impressive pedigree coming through Manchester United he’s now found his feet in professional football and done well under Pete (Wild) at Barrow.

“We feel as though there’s even more to come, so we’re looking forward to developing him and making even better than what he already is, we’re really excited.”

Warren added: “I’m very happy to be here, I can’t wait to get started. I had a Zoom meeting with the gaffer and it was really good, I was very impressed with what I was shown.”
