Admissions Factors & Required Coursework | Admissions | Cornell College of Human Ecology

The College of Human Ecology Undergraduate Admissions Team practices selective admissions and takes a mission-focused approach to the comprehensive review of our deep, diverse, and talented applicant pool. We are interested in transfer candidates who are prepared to thrive in the context of Cornell University and who are compelled by the work done in the College of Human Ecology.

We consider a range of selection criteria linked to the College of Human Ecology's mission and education, as well as the value an applicant will bring to the College of Human Ecology and broader University communities. In addition to applicants' academic readiness and rigor, perspective, and life and other out-of-classroom experiences, we consider the characteristics and skills that our successful students, community members, and alumni have demonstrated. See below for more information about our selection factors.

Undergraduate Transfer Admissions Selection Factors

  • Carefully review the required preparatory courses that must be completed or in progress at the time of application. Completing the work allows the Admissions Committee to understand the rigor for which a student is prepared and positions incoming transfers to graduate on time.
  • Competitive transfer candidates have earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher (with As and Bs) in a curriculum parallel to that of current Human Ecology students.

The CHE Admissions Committee carefully considers whether an applicant clearly articulates a compelling interest in and connection to the College's mission and their major of interest through the application essay. Being sure to answer the Human Ecology question and presenting strong writing skills are critical.

College of Human Ecology students are actively engaged in their school and greater communities and have an outwardly focused perspective. The service, work, and related experiences in which transfer applicants have participated can help demonstrate a connection to the College's mission and major of interest, as well as test their career goals.

Design supplements are required for applicants to the following majors. Applications to these majors without the required supplement will not be reviewed. The design supplement instructions are revised each year. Applicants who are reapplying to these majors need to update and submit new supplements.

  • Design and Environmental Analysis
  • Fashion Design and Management (Fashion Design and Fashion Design Management options)
  • Fiber Science

These supplements are required in addition to the materials needed to complete the Common Application. These materials must be submitted by the Common Application deadline for critical evaluation by department faculty.
