Citrus Heights fire damages CubeSmart storage units
RUNNING AT THE LIMIT. BACK TO YOU GUYS. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. 632 NOW DAMAGED POSSESSIONS FOR SOME CITRUS HEIGHTS RESIDENTS AFTER A FIRE TORE THROUGH A STORAGE FACILITY. THE SMOKE THAT YOU SAW MADE IT VERY CHALLENGING FOR THOSE FIRE CREWS. IT HAPPENED AT THE CUBE SMART STORAGE FACILITY OFF GREENBACK LANE IN CITRUS HEIGHTS. THAT’S WHERE WE FIND MIKE TESELLE AND MICAH. YOU JUST GOT SOME NEW VIDEO SHOWING HOW CHALLENGING IT REALLY WAS. YEAH, AND RIGHT BEFORE WE GET TO THAT VIDEO, LET ME JUST DIRECT YOUR ATTENTION RIGHT TO THAT DOORWAY. AND YOU CAN SEE, EVEN WITH THE SUN UP, HOW DARK IT IS, JUST TRYING TO LOOK INSIDE ONE OF THESE STORAGE UNITS THAT WAS BURNED. NOW TAKE A LOOK AT THIS NEW HELMET CAM VIDEO COMING IN FROM METRO FIRE SHOWING THE CONDITIONS THAT FIRE CREWS FACED WHEN THEY GOT HERE, TRYING TO GET INTO AN ACCESS THAT FIRE, WHICH WAS CLEARLY, UH, BURNING THROUGH MULTIPLE UNITS HERE. WHAT MADE THIS SO DIFFICULT IS THAT AS FIRE CREWS WERE MAKING ENTRY INTO THESE UNITS AND TRYING TO PUT WATER ON THE FIRE THAT CREATED CONDITIONS SO SMOKY THAT THEY SAY THEY WERE DEALING WITH ZERO VISIBILITY CHALLENGES FROM THIS FIRE BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED SPACE THEY JUST GOT DONE TALKING TO ONE OF THE FIRE CAPTAINS AND OR FIRE CHIEFS, I SHOULD SAY. AND HE SAID, YOU KNOW, THERE’S HALLWAYS IN HERE LINKING THESE STORAGE UNITS. IT’S VERY NARROW. AND THERE WAS A LOT OF SMOKE. UH, IN FACT, THE TRYING TO GET CREWS IN AND OUT OF THAT SMOKE TO DEAL WITH THIS FIRE WAS SUCH A CHORE THAT THEY ACTUALLY CALLED A SECOND ALARM JUST TO BE ABLE TO ROTATE THE MANPOWER OF THOSE CREWS GOING IN AND OUT, DEALING WITH THOSE SMOKING CONDITIONS WHILE WEARING THEIR OXYGEN MASKS. SO COME BACK OUT HERE LIVE THE GOOD NEWS HERE IN JUST ABOUT AN OVER AN HOUR, UH, WORTH OF TIME, CREWS WERE ABLE TO GET A HANDLE ON THIS FIRE AND KNOCK IT DOWN. BUT NOT BEFORE SOME 70 TO 80 UNITS HERE WERE DAMAGED. THE DAMAGE RANGING FROM MINOR TO MAJOR, ACCORDING TO FIRE CREWS. AND IF YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO, YOU KNOW, RENTS ACCESS HERE AT THIS CUBE. SMART. RIGHT ACROSS FROM SAN JUAN HIGH SCHOOL. KEEP IN MIND MUCH OF THE DAMAGE IS IN THAT BUILDING. CONNECTED TO THE FRONT OFFICE. MOVING BACK, THAT WAY, WE’VE NOTICED A COUPLE PEOPLE COMING HERE THIS MORNING JUST TO CHECK ON THEIR UNITS, OTHER BUILDINGS ARE, UH, YOU KNOW, UNSCATHED. BUT, BOY, SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE HERE. RIGHT BEHIND ME, BEHIND THE OFFICE. RIGHT ACROSS FROM SAN JUAN HIGH SCHOOL. THE GOOD NEWS FOR COMMUTERS REAL QUICK IS GREENBACK LANE IS A HEAVILY USED ARTERY HERE FOR THE MORNING COMMUTE. AND IF YOU’RE DRIVING BY OR COMING TO SAN JUAN HIGH SCHOOL THIS MORNING, YOU LIKELY WON’T EVEN NOTICE ANY IMPACT AS THE FIRE CREWS ARE GONE. THE FIRE IS OUT AND THINGS ARE CALMER HERE AS CREWS NOW SAY IT’S GOING TO BE A LONG PROCESS TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT EXACTLY WHAT CAUえーゆー

Citrus Heights fire damages CubeSmart storage units
A fire at the CubeSmart storage center late Tuesday night damaged more than 70 units, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said. Fire crews were dispatched around 11:53 p.m. to the facility on Greenback Lane across the street from San Juan High School. Firefighters had difficulty reaching the fire inside the property due to limited space and obscured visibility from the smoke, officials said. A 2nd alarm was called due to the workload and to rotate crews. Firefighters breathed off air bottles and after an hour knocked down the fire, officials said. About 70 units received minor to major damage. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. This story was curated by Hearst's KCRA Alert Desk.
