A Sacramento-area educator appeared in court for the first time Tuesday after his arrest over the weekend.
Court documents reveal 49-year-old Jason Prater is facing two counts of lewd and lascivious act on a child under 14. The charges come after Prater allegedly sexually assaulted a girl from March 2012 to March 2015 when she was 3 to 5 years old.
The judge gave Prater a "no contact order," saying that he could in no way contact or communicate with the alleged victim.
Jail records show he's being held on a $4,100,000 bail. He will be back in court on May 30.
The investigation into Prater began on Friday, May 17, when the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said a mother had just found out her teenage daughter was allegedly sexually assaulted by Prater when she was a young child.
Officials said they contacted Prater, and he "made some admissions and confirmed significant parts of the girl's statement."
He was arrested Friday evening and booked into jail in Sacramento early Saturday morning.
"He's had a long history of access to kids," Sgt. Amar Gandhi told KCRA 3.
He said Prater worked as a martial arts instructor in the Sacramento and Roseville area.
He was also an education specialist at the Roseville campus of the John Adams Academy. Norman A. Gonzales, the director of outreach and compliance for the school, sent KCRA 3 the following statement:
"Over the weekend, the Academy received a communication from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office making administration aware of the arrest of Jason Prater, an Education Specialist at our Roseville Campus for alleged crimes that occurred approximately a decade ago unrelated to John Adams Academy. Immediately upon learning of the arrest, the Academy placed Mr. Prater on administrative leave to ensure he has no contact with students pending investigation of the allegations.
Mr. Prater worked in a limited capacity in the secondary program at the Roseville campus (middle school), had the appropriate CTC-issued credential and background check, and worked in a setting with other teachers and adults present. We are in the process of reaching out to families of students who worked with Mr. Prater while at the Academy to ensure they are aware of the allegations.
While these allegations do not involve John Adams Academy, our hearts go out to all victims of abuse, and we encourage anyone with information relevant to this case to contact the Sheriff’s Child Abuse Bureau at 916-874-5191 and childabuse@sacsheriff.com."
A parent of a kindergarten student at the school told KCRA 3 she talked to her young daughter about the allegations.
"It's nothing against the school, so it really sucks because we put so much effort into finding a school that we felt like she was going to be safe in, so then to like kind of have this happen, it really just opens your eyes," Anastasia Rodgers said. "You never know. Your kids can't be safe anywhere."
The sheriff's office said Prater also worked as a special education teacher at Options for Youth Charter School in Sacramento. A school official told KCRA 3 he was no longer an employee as of August 2023.
This is an ongoing investigation, and deputies are searching for any other possible victims.
If you know anything that could help the investigation or believe you or a loved one are a victim, please reach out to the Sheriff's Child Abuse Bureau at childabuse@sacsheriff.com or 916-874-5191.
