Magid is right about the reality that newsrooms are seeing shrinking resources. While Generative AI is not meant to lead to smaller newsrooms, it would be naive to think that isn’t going to happen. Newsroom leaders need to set standards now versus waiting to see what happens. It’s crucial to strike a balance and ensure AI complements rather than replaces the human touch in journalism.

One of the most interesting trends in modern journalism is how "the independent journalist era" seems to be taking off. According to Axios, the number of Substack journalists in news and politics making more than $1 million has doubled over the past year — and is now in "double digits". The numbers reflect a growing supply of newsletters form independent journalists - not least on substack. But the numbers are also a testament to the the ever more segmented demand of modern media consumers - of which media companies should be keenly aware.

LogoTV.com (among other Paramount networks) has been scrubbed and erased, as was Logo's editorial site Logo News (which the URL is now for sale); formerly known as NewNowNext. It seems to be a strange way Paramount is deciding to celebrate Pride Month: Erasing nearly 20 years of LGBTQ+ content, archived community history, editorial content, reporting, storytelling, and queer representation from the internet. The network that birthed the iconic franchise RuPaul's Drag Race is officially dead, and is used now is a forwarding tool to push to Paramount+. What's also sad, as I review the coverage, is the lack of mention of Logo in mainstream news outlets. This once again shows the need for media *by* us and *for* us in the community. With so many folks in power at the company who are from the community, both in LGBTQ+ representation and former positions at Logo, one would assume that they would see the importance of keeping Logo alive and well - at least up and running. But, I was wrong. Enough about them, I want to take this moment to uplift and spotlight those who made their mark at Logo. Who, like me and my former teammates, worked tirelessly to create content for and uplift the LGBTQ+ community. While this is a dark day to see it gone with the flip of a corporate switch, I know our work made a positive impact somewhere for someone along the way. And to those people, I want to wish them a #HappyPride.

What a proud moment for Hearst Connecticut Media Group's newsroom – the team received the top First Amendment Award in the CT SPJ Excellence in Journalism Contest, along with 107 honors overall! The First Amendment Award recognized a dogged FOI investigation, by Jacqueline Rabe Thomas, Joshua Eaton and Brian Lockhart – led by I-team editor Matt Rocheleau. The judges said: “This thorough look at Bridgeport’s long record of flouting FOI requirements led to both an overdue strengthening of state law and an immediate promise by the city to improve its practices. Follow-up stories documented continuing problems. The response to this well-researched investigation shows the power of the press to be an agent of change and keep government open and accountable to its citizens.”    The series was also selected as a finalist in the 2023 Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Awards FOI Award, with judges commenting: "This hale Hearst team took on one America’s most recalcitrant local governments and won a landmark victory for transparency in their home state."   The work also led to IRE naming the City of Bridgeport as a finalist in the 2023 Golden Padlock Award, highlighting the most secretive public agency or official in the U.S. The Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information honored the work with the highly-regarded Stephen A. Collins Memorial Freedom of Information Award "given each year to journalists who help protect and expand the public’s ability to access its government." This was one of two unwavering investigations receiving national accolades this year. The second was a series exposing a fake traffic ticket saga embroiling Connecticut’s largest law enforcement agency in controversy.   In April, the series won the National Headliner Award for a newspaper series not in A top 20 media market. Judges wrote: "The results of this series speak for themselves. The resignations of the state's two top public safety officials, a federal criminal grand jury probe led by the U.S. Dept. of Justice. And at the heart of it, trusted state troopers falsifying tickets to make themselves look better -- worsened by the fact that it all skews racial profiling data. This series exposes everyday corruption, and restores our faith." This project, led by reporters Bill Cummings, Joshua Eaton, Jacqueline Rabe Thomas and Taylor Johnston, also previously received the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists’ top award for investigative reporting and the Connecticut Foundation for Open Government’s Freedom of Information Award. Most importantly, it is very rewarding to know quality local journalism like this is driving positive societal good and impact. The more I dove into the behind-the-scenes process of reporting and producing the stellar investigative series, The 13th Step, the more convinced I became about the importance of this kind of journalism -- whether as a podcast, broadcast features, or online - for the future of public media. It's an investment in the future of the medium, and an investment in democracy. #journalism #worldpressfreedomday2024

Ads are different on podcasts - they work better. Jeff Ulster has an excellent summary of the arguments. Commercial TV has allowed a total ensh*ion of the experience as accountants try to figure out just how much they can push us before we leave the medium (the same goes for commercial radio). Pods have had a different ad culture - and if they stay protected, we are in good shape as an industry. But - the forces of darkness are gathering. I have noticed some of my favourite shows (talking about you Scott Galloway) now have 3 minute or more ad blocks. I used to enjoy his reads on shorter ad stacks, but now I skip them. I'm hooked on the show, so likely some algo will tell his people they could even do more, but at some point, it makes me resent the ads I do hear before hitting the skip button, which undermines the special power of podcast ads. Since pods are great at delivering niche audiences, it makes the case for branded content even stronger. You can gather a few thousand fans a day/week who care about your area of subject expertise and, since they are often spending 20-30 minutes per episode with you, create a different kind of relationship. In short - and I know everyone who works in the medium knows this, but it bears repeating - if you want to form a genuine relationship with your customers, pods are effective. https://lnkd.in/gZhM4J8W

The Dean Scream is fake news. One of the most difficult aspects of video production to this day, August 8. 2024, is how to share 2 microphone recordings of the same event, with a client. Clients would ask why is one microphone so far away, why is the other microphone so crisp and clear but they can't hear anyone else? To this day, every post game sports interview with athletes and coaches still face this issue, why is the coach or athlete so easy to hear, but the sports reporters just 10 to 20 feet away, cannot be heard? Dean was screaming and the crowd was screaming back, except the crowd audio feed was never mixed into Dean's Scream, which was into a highly isolated microphone designed to pick up Dean's voice, and not much else, making him look like a fool as he screamed, because it looked like no one was screaming back. I don't understand why the Dean story still has legs since this was an audio mixing technical error, not something Dean did wrong. In other words, it was the stupidity of the media and how they reported this story, that has given it legendary status. Just another example of how the mainstream media rewrites history on a daily basis.

2004... podcasting is associated with a new way people are distributing and listening to audio content online.  2024... It's whatever the "consumer" says it is, even if it's just talking heads with captions on an exclusive video platform. I like 2004's better. #podcasting

Media relations is not about numbers, it's about value. 👉 Not in how many journalists you pitch. Research and careful targeting are critical, otherwise your batting average will approach zero pretty quickly. A gigantic media list only creates more work and devalues your effort. 👉 Not in how many stories you land. Who cares if you place five, 10 or 100 stories in outlets that are meaningless to your client and won't move the needle? One well-targeted story in a high-value publication can be plenty to achieve the goal of the campaign. This is why agencies that guarantee media placements can't be trusted. They work hard to deliver numbers, not value. Marrying the right story to the right media is where you find success.
