Desperation is reaching the top of the Dallas Cowboys organization. After almost 30 years without a Super Bowl to celebrate and with their salary cap nearly exhausted, the so-called Team of America has left no stone unturned to complete their roster for the 2024 NFL season.

The Cowboys face a delicate situation for next season. Although the team has been consistent, achieving 12 or more wins in each of the past three seasons, they seem to "deflate" when reaching the playoffs.

The furthest they have advanced in these past three years was the Divisional Round in 2022, when they were eliminated by the San Francisco 49ers. The last time the Cowboys won a Super Bowl was in 1995, when they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17.

Although Jerry Jones, owner of the team, promised they would not hold back in free agency, the truth is that the roster had few movements due to the salary cap constraints. Simply put, quarterback Dak Prescott's contract will cost them $29 million in base salary and hit $55 million against the salary cap.

In the offseason, Jones was generous to two other players, receiver CeeDee Lamb and linebacker Micah Parsons, who reached the highest-paid at their respective positions, but at a high cost to the team.

McCarthy's solution

With his job on the line but little money to plug the holes in his team, head coach Mike McCarthy has had to get creative. According to recent press reports, the Cowboys' HC is setting his eyes on the UFL.

McCarthy has his sights set on four players specifically: defensive ends Jonathan Garvin and Wyatt Ray, fullback John Lovett, and linebacker Derick Roberson. All four have NFL experience, but their most recent seasons were spent in the UFL.

Lovett graduated from Penn State and then played for several NFL teams, most recently the Pittsburgh Steelers, and last year he played for the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas. Jonathan Garvin played for the Miami Hurricanes in college football, then with the Green Bay Packers in the NFL, and in 2023 he landed with the Birmingham Stallions.

Roberson played for the Sam Houston Bearkats in the NCAA, then for the Tennessee Titans and the Houston Texans in the NFL, and later moved to the DC Defenders. Ray graduated from Boston College, had brief stints with nine NFL teams, and finally made it to the Brahmas in 2024.

The Cowboys in the offseason

In addition to contract extensions for Lamb and Parsons, the Cowboys brought back star running back Ezekiel Elliott. The rest of the team's moves involved players from the second and third teams.

Negotiations remain pending with Prescott, who will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2024 season. If Dallas fails to retain the quarterback and restructure his contract, the hit to their salary cap will be so great that the team will surely have to continue looking in the discount bin to complete their roster.
