What is Federal Work-Study?

Federal Work-Study (FWS) serves as a federal financial aid program, providing students with part-time employment to help cover educational expenses.

How to qualify for Federal Work-Study?

To be eligible for Federal Work-Study (FWS), you must:

  1. Have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with our college.
  2. Demonstrate unmet financial need based on your FAFSA results.
  3. Be enrolled in at least six credit hours, maintaining satisfactory academic progress.
  4. Be proactive in exploring FWS positions and completing required application materials.

If you are interested in an FWS position at MCC, your first step is to complete the FWS Student Interest Form. Most FWS positions require a resume and sometimes a cover letter. For guidance on crafting an effective resume and cover letter, visit the Professional Development and Job Readines site.

Federal Work Study (Lab Assistant CIS) - Computer Information Systems Department

Status: Federal Work-Study Positions
Location: Mesa Community College - Southern and Dobson Campus
Department: Computer Information Systems Department - BA40
Pay Rate: $14.00 to $16.00 an hour
Hours Per Week: 19.5 hours per week
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday: mornings, afternoons, and evenings
Not Eligible for Benefits: This is a part-time temporary position, not eligible for benefits

Job Summary:
Provide general lab support. Answer lab phone, greet students and staff, assist students with signing in to the lab or requesting academic support to connect with specialized lab technicians, and provide basic tech support. Must have basic computer skills, good oral, and written communication skills, and work well with others. Other job duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitor student use of Multi Use Lab facility in BA 40
  • Provide courteous customer service in person and virtually
  • Includes basic technology support, directions to staff offices or classrooms/buildings, or assistance accessing lab technology
  • Ensure students accurately record lab use

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED and some college
  • Currently or previously enrolled and have successfully completed CIS105 or BPC110
  • Experience establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with diverse backgrounds and cultures

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience providing courteous customer service over the phone, in person & virtually
  • Effective communication skills -Ability to maintain professionalism including punctuality & reliability
  • Attention to detail and high degree of accuracy -Experience with MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Willing to work morning, afternoon and/or evening hours
  • Willing to learn new tools and programs

Special Working Conditions:

  • May require some evenings
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
  • May be required to lift or carry up to 25 pounds.

Desk Assistant - Learning Enhancement Center

Status: Federal Work-Study Positions
Location: Mesa Community College - Southern and Dobson Campus
Department: Learning Enhancement Center, Elsner Library
Pay Rate: $14.35 an hour
Hours Per Week: 19.5 hours per week
Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday 9:00 am to 7:00 pm; Friday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm - Morning Hours Strongly Preferred
Not Eligible for Benefits: This is a part-time temporary position, not eligible for benefits

Job Summary:
Mesa Community College is hiring several Desk Assistants positions to work in the Fall 2024 semester. These positions provide reliable clerical assistance and outstanding customer service in the Learning Enhancement Center.

Essential Functions:

  • 60% Greets and logs students in and out for Center usage; provides front-line customer service; schedules tutoring appointments; monitors the virtual front desk.
  • 25% Answers/routes incoming calls; tracks Center resources; provides clerical assistance; performs data entry.
  • 15% Connects students with tutors; stocks center with materials; performs duties commensurate to grade level of position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Awarded Federal Work Study.
  • Possess customer service orientation.
  • Possess effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Google Suite and MS Office.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience multi-tasking in a busy setting.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented environment.
  • Experience handling confidential information.

Special Working Conditions:

  • Desk Assistants will work in-person and may work at various LEC locations on the Southern and Dobson or Red Mountain campus
