1. Where should the applications to obtain or renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia be submitted?

Applications to obtain or renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia should be submitted personally by the applicant to:

  • The Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, if the application is submitted in the Republic of Armenia
  • The respective Embassy or the Consular Office of the Republic of Armenia, if the application is submitted in a foreign country.

2. Who is eligible to become a citizen of the Republic of Armenia and what requirements should the applicant meet?

Any person who is at least 18 years of age can become a citizen of the Republic of Armenia, if he/she meets the following requirements:

  1. Is an ethnic armenian by descent
  2. Has been permanently and lawfully residing in the Republic of Armenia for at least three years (applications submitted under this clause should be presented only to the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia)
  3. Has been in a registered marriage with a citizen of the Republic of Armenia for two years before applying for citizenship and has been residing lawfully in the Republic of Armenia for at least 365 days during the indicated period
  4. Has a parent or a child who is a citizen of the Republic of Armenia
  5. Has lost his/her citizenship of the Republic of Armenia by personally submitting an application for renunciation after January 1, 1995
  6. Is recognized as a Refugee in the Republic of Armenia
  7. Is recognized as a Stateless Person residing in Armenia
  8. Has been permanently and lawfully residing in the Republic of Armenia for at least one year and whose parents (or one of the parents) are former citizens of the Republic of Armenia

3. What documents are required to obtain the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia?

  1. Application questionnaire (download)
  2. Foreign state issued valid passport and a copy of the given passport
  3. Six (6) color photos (35 x 45 mm)
  4. Birth certificate and a copy of the given certificate
  5. Marriage certificate and a copy of the given certificate (if there has been a change in the last name)
  6. Passport of the spouse and the Armenian translation of the given passport (if there has been a change in the last name)
  7. Birth certificate of the child and the copy of the given certificate, or the Armenian passport of the child or the parent and the copy of the given passport, or any other proof of Armenian citizenship (if the application to obtain the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia is submitted under the 4th clause of the requirements listed hereby)
  8. Any of the following documents confirming the Armenian descent (ancestry) of the applicant:
    1. A certificate of baptism, containing a record of the baptized person’s Armenian descent, issued by any church organization listed in the Appendix 4 of the N 1390-N Decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia from November 23, 2007 and validated in accordance with the requirements listed in the mentioned Decision.
    2. Document with a clear indication of the applicant being of Armenian descent, issued by the competent authorities of a foreign state and verified either with an apostille or undergone consular legalization
    3. Birth certificate or another Identification document of a parent (or a grandparent, a blood sibling) that contains a record of the Armenian ancestry of the mentioned next of kin
  9. Documents listed under point “C” of the previous clause should be accompanied by documents proving the kinship of the applicant with the person of the Armenian descent (listed under point “C” of the previous clause), issued by the competent authorities of the respective state
  10. A non-citizenship certificate of a stateless person and the copy of the given certificate
  11. A Convention Travel Document of a refugee
  12. Documents confirming the residence status or the lawful residency of the applicant in the Republic of Armenia and the copy of the given document
  13. Receipt for payment of the required state filing fee
  14. If required, additional documents might be requested

4. What documents are required to renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia?

  1. Application questionnaire (download)
  2. Valid passport of the citizen of the Republic of Armenia and the copy of the given passport
  3. Birth certificate and the copy of the given certificate
  4. Six (6) color photos (35 x 45 mm)
  5. Marriage certificate and a copy of the given certificate
  6. Birth certificate of the child of the applicant and a copy of the given certificate
  7. Military record book (if the applicant is a conscript)
  8. Receipt for payment of the required state filing fee
  9. If the applicant is a citizen of a foreign county, the valid passport issued by the competent authorities of the respective country and the Armenian translation of the given passport, verified in accordance with the law
  10. Written certificate or a reference issued by the competent authorities of the given foreign state, recognizing the possibility of granting the applicant the citizenship of the respective state, providing that the mentioned applicant does not have citizenship of any other country, and the Armenian translation of the given document, verified in accordance with the law

5. What documents are required to renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia of a child?

  1. Application questionnaire (download)
  2. Valid Armenian passport of the child and the copy of the given passport
  3. Valid passport of the applicant parent and a copy of the given passport
  4. Six (6) color photos (35 x 45 mm)
  5. Marriage certificate, paternity certificate or a document proving the single motherhood, and a copy of the given certificate (document)
  6. Birth certificate of the child and the copy of the given certificate
  7. The consent form and the copy of the identification document of the second parent, if one of the parents is a citizen of the Republic of Armenia. In case of inability to present the consent form personally by the parent to the respective Embassy or Consular Office of the Republic of Armenia, the Armenian translation of the form, verified in accordance with the law, should be presented.
  8. Receipt for payment of the required state filing fee
  9. If the child is a citizen of a foreign county, the valid passport issued by the competent authorities of the respective foreign country
  10. Written certificate or a reference issued by the competent authorities of a given foreign state, recognizing the possibility of granting the child the citizenship of the respective state, providing that the mentioned child does not have citizenship of any other country, and the Armenian translation of the given document, verified in accordance with the law
  11. If the child is between fourteen and eighteen years of age, a written consent form by the child should also be presented

6. The processing time for the applications to obtain or renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia

After registration by the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, Applications to obtain the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia are processed within 90 workdays, while the applications to renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia are processed within 6 months.

  • The regulations of procedures for obtaining or renouncing the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia are defined by the “Law of the Republic of Armenia on the Citizenship of the Republic of Armenia” and N 1390-N Decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia from November 23, 2007.
  • Obtaining citizenship of another country or unilaterally renouncing the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia do not automatically lead to losing the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia.
  • The citizenship of the Republic of Armenia can be granted or renounced only through the Decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia.
