Manchester United have made contact over the possibility of Kieran McKenna replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford this summer, according to reports.

The Ipswich Town boss has enjoyed back-to-back promotions with the Tractor Boys after finishing second in League One and the Championship. McKenna arrived at Portman Road to take on his first managerial position - and departed a first-team coaching role at United for the opportunity.

The Red Devils appear to be sounding out the 38-year-old's interest in a return to the club with Foot Mercato suggesting United's new INEOS hierarchy have made contact with McKenna's representatives. The Guardian note that multiple Premier League clubs are interested in his signature, and that his former side are one.

McKenna is one of a number of names who have been linked with taking charge Old Trafford as the uncertainty surrounding Ten Hag's future continues to grow. England boss Gareth Southgate is also said to be a contender.

United boss Ten Hag is expected to discover whether his services will be retained at the end of the season. His side could still win the FA Cup but could also face missing out on Europe altogether for the first time since 2014.

McKenna, who worked under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, enjoyed his time working in the North West. The Ipswich boss only departed so he could forge his own management career.

Speaking about his time at United, McKenna told the BBC upon his move to East Anglia: "It's a fantastic club to work for. I was happy there.

“I could see a future there, but it was an ambition I've had right throughout my coaching career to go into management. When the initial contact came from Ipswich, I knew the background of the club, it's obviously a club with fantastic traditions and history.

"I also knew the current situation with the ownership and the investment that has been put into the club and that they're looking to make going forward. It was the right time for me to take the step, it's the right profile of club I was looking for and I'm grateful for them giving me this opportunity. I'm confident I'll be able to repay that faith in the future."
