UFC Fight Night 147 results: Nathaniel Wood taps José Alberto Quiñónez with 2nd-round rear-naked choke

Bantamweights Nathaniel Wood and José Alberto Quiñónez threw down tonight (Saturday, March 16, 2019) at UFC Fight Night 147, inside O2 Arena in London, England, live on ESPN+. Wood was an exciting prospect on a seven-fight win streak, including submissions in his first two UFC bouts, while Quiñónez had won four straight after dropping his UFC debut.

Quiñónez slipped for a moment on his first kick. Wood was looking to counter him and landed a big left hook. He caught Quiñónez’s leg but Quiñónez turned him around and looked for the takedown against the cage. Wood avoided the first couple throws but eventually went down as Quiñónez landed in side control. He worked for position until Wood reversed and they stood back up. Quiñónez kicked Wood in the leg. Wood tried to work his jab as Quiñónez threw kicks. Wood landed another nice left hook. He knocked Quiñónez down with a jab! Quiñónez scrambled, and Wood looked for a D’Arce choke. Quiñónez grabbed his own leg to defend and got back to his feet. Quiñónez threw up a high kick. Wood tried to work his way inside, then kicked Quiñónez’ legs a couple times. Wood was slipping and ripping, and blasted Quiñónez with a one-two. He landed a bodylock takedown with ten seconds to go to close out the round.

Wood cracked Quiñónez with another right straight as he countered a low kick. Quiñóneza tied him up and looked for the takedown. Wood kept his balance, grabbing right under Quiñónez’ balls to stay upright. They broke apart, and Wood landed another cross. Quiñónez landed a hook, and a jab, and kept throwing kicks. He tried for another clinch takedown, but Wood landed a slick outside trip instead, taking Quiñónez’s back as he tried to scramble. He locked up a rear-naked choke, and that was it! Amazing win for Nathaniel Wood, extending his win streak to eight. That whole sequence was beautiful.

He said afterwards he had no gameplan besides working his A-game. He said his opponent was tricky, and he wants to eventually get to the top ten. “I want to be in there with the best in the world, and I believe that I am the best in the world with the wins I’ve got.”

Official result: Nathaniel Wood def. José Alberto Quiñónez via submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:46 of Round 2
