Zdeněk Žemla won bronze medals in both singles and doubles at the 1906 Athina Olympics, competing for Bohemia. There were three Žemlas who played tennis at the 1906 Games – Jaroslav, Ladislav, and Zdeněk – with all competing for I. Český Lawn-Tenisový Klub Praha. Ladislav and Zdeněk played together to win the doubles bronze medal. We suspect they are related, possibly brothers, but have not yet been able to confirm that. Ladislav was the best known tennis player of the group, competing again at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics, and winning several other events in Hungary in that era.
Zdeněk played a number of tournaments in Europe in the 1900s, especially the Austrian International Championships, at which he made the semi-finals in 1901, and the quarter-finals in 1904 and 1906. He also played the Bohemian Championships and the Praha Tournament several times, losing in early rounds.
