Description

Mexican athletes first competed at the 1900 Olympic Games, when three polo players played in Paris, in a mixed North American team. Mexico did not compete again at the Olympics until 1924, but it has competed since without fail.

Through 2022, Mexico has won 72 Olympic medals, 13 of them gold, all at the Games of the Olympiad. Its most successful competitor has been equestrian rider Humberto Mariles, who won two golds and one bronze at the 1948 Olympics. Diver Joaquín Capilla leads the total medal count with four medals, and one gold. They are both trailed by taekwondoka María Espinoza, with three medals, one of each color.

Mexico sent five bobsled competitors to the 1928 Olympic Winter Games and, in 1932, they entered another bobsled team (which did not compete). Its other Winter Olympic appearances have come in 1984, 1988, 1992, 1994, 2002, and from 2010 onwards. Not well known is that there has been one edition of the Pan American Winter Games, in 1990 at Las Leñas, Argentina, and Mexico did compete there in Alpine skiing.

In their 10 Winter Olympic appearances, Mexico has competed in six different sports/disciplines: Alpine skiing, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, and skeleton. Mexico has never won a medal at the Olympic Winter Games, with their best finish being their inaugural one, in the 1928 five-man bobsleigh competition, in which they finished 11th of 25 teams.

One Mexican Winter athlete has competed six times, that being the interesting Alpine skier Hubertus von Fürstenberg-von Hohenlohe, who was the son of Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and Princess Ira of Fürstenberg. Hubertus was born in Mexico but had dual Austrian and Liechtensteiner citizenship. He could not qualify for the Austrian national team but, as his father owned a consular title from Mexico, Hubertus founded the Mexican Skiing Association, became its President and was thus able to ski for Mexico, competing as Hubertus von Fürstenberg at Sarajevo in 1984, and Hubertus von Hohenlohe after that. Hubertus von Fürstenberg-von Hohenlohe-Langenburg dabbled in multiple careers, including photography, and as a pop singer under the name Andy Himalaya and Royal Disaster. He learned skiing in Sierra Nevada (in the United States) and in Austria, and would carry the Mexican flag at the Winter Olympic Opening Ceremonies in 1994, 2010, and 2014.

Mexico also hosted the Games of the XIXth Olympiad at Mexico City (Ciudad de México) in 1968. In 1962 the Olympic Committee of Mexico was awarded with the Count Alberto Bonacossa Trophy.
