Name: | Nuclear factor kappa-B (NFkappaB) |
Definition: | Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a role in innate immunity to pathogens by sensing microorganisms through structural motifs called pathogen-associated microbial patterns (PAMPs). Stimulation of TLRs by PAMPs initiates a signaling cascade that ultimately leads to the activation of the NF-kB (Nuclear Factor-KappaB). NF-kB is composed of homo- and heterodimers of five members of the Rel family including NF-kB1(p50), NF-kB2 (p52), RelA (p65), RelB, and c-Rel (Rel). NF-kB dimers are sequestered in the cytosol of unstimulated cells via IkBs. TLR stimulation leads to the phosphorylation of IkBs, their dissociation and subsequent degradation, thereby allowing activation of the NF-kB complex and translocation into the nucleus. |
