New Nintendo 3DS production ends worldwide (update)

At least the New Nintendo 2DS XL is almost here

Production on the New Nintendo 3DS has ended in Japan, according to Nintendo’s Japanese website. This includes all colors of the upgraded handheld — but not all models.

There are two versions of New Nintendo 3DS currently available: the New Nintendo 3DS and the New Nintendo 3DS XL. The basic version is smaller and has swappable face plates and colored face buttons.

A notification on the Japanese page for the smaller system notes that it’s out of production. No such marker is found on the New Nintendo 3DS XL’s page, however. The larger model has the same basic capabilities, but with slightly bigger screens and a heavier body.

Production ends just before the release of New Nintendo 2DS XL, a revision of the 3D-free Nintendo 2DS handheld. The system is light with a clamshell design — similar to the New 3DS, in other words, barring the 3D and face plate options.

Update: Nintendo of America told Polygon that stateside customers shouldn’t be affected by production ending on the New Nintendo 3DS.

“This announcement does not affect Nintendo of America territories, as the model in question was only sold in limited quantities as special offerings,” a representative told us. “There are no changes to the sales status of New Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS or the upcoming New Nintendo 2DS XL, which launches on July 28.”

Update 2: A rep from Nintendo of Europe confirmed to Eurogamer that the system will be discontinued in the European region as well.
