Summer, sun, symphony concert: The Bayreuth Festival invites everyone to the open-air concert ‘Wagner for all’ with a picnic on 30 July. With free admission, the festival orchestra under the direction of Nathalie Stutzmann will present musical and spatial references to Wagner, including Anton Bruckner's 7th Symphony.
Ailbhe McDonagh is a celebrated Irish composer with works for orchestra, chamber music and solo instruments. Notable commissions include her Irish Isles Suite recorded by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Irish Four Seasons recorded by violinist Lynda O’Connor, String Quartets No. 1 and No. 2, Dance Suite for Solo Cello and Westland Glow – an eight-hand piece for piano. Ailbhe has also written pedagogical music including her It’s a Piano Thing and It’s a Cello Thing repertoire books published by Boosey & Hawkes. As a cellist, Ailbhe performs as a soloist and chamber musician. She recently released an album of the complete Bach Suites and also the complete Beethoven Cello Sonatas with pianist John O’Conor on the Steinway label.

Christian Jost's new work provides the answer: Eismeer ("Sea of Ice") for saxophone quartet, vibraphone and string orchestra will be premiered on July 26 at the Stadtkirche St. Nikolai with the SIGNUM saxophone quartet and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. The composer himself will conduct.
A symphonic zigzag journey: Under the direction of Jonathan Bloxham, the Grafenegg Academy Orchestra together with soloist Colin Currie will give the Austrian premiere of Andrew Norman's Switch for percussion and orchestra at the Grafenegg Festival on 21 July 2024.
A haunting look into the entanglements of the 1980s: Santa Fe Opera presents the world premiere of the opera The Righteous by Gregory Spears on 13 July 2024. The opera, based on an original libretto by Tracy K. Smith, with whom Spears regularly collaborates, is a full-length work spanning twelve years of American history (1979-1990).
The works of Estonian composer Elis Hallik will be published by Schott Music in the future. Born in 1986, the musician has made a name for herself in Europe with her individual style and will bring a new voice to the Schott catalogue.
A look at the end of time: Wilfried Hiller's new work Apocalypse will be premiered at the ION (International Organ Week Nuremberg) music festival on 2 July 2024. In addition to an instrumental ensemble, Johannes Euler as St John of Patmos, Anna-Lena Elbert as a colouratura soprano and the vocal ensemble Die Singphoniker will be performing in the vocal parts.

Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 was composed within a period of only a few weeks in 1943. Its unusual formal structure, with five very unevenly balanced movements, was not the only thing to alienate the critics at first: above all, the expected triumphant final movement was missing, which would have symbolised the turning point of the on-going war after the Battle of Stalingrad. While it was officially agreed that this symphony reflected the horror of war, the conductor Kurt Sanderling, a friend of Shostakovich, said that it was a representation of the "horror of an intellectual's life at that time".

While the German Wehrmacht besieged Leningrad, Shostakovich wrote his ‘Leningrad’ Symphony. More than a million people died during the 28-month-long isolation of the city. Against this backdrop, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 became a symbol for the trapped Leningraders of their solidarity and will to survive. At its premiere and even more so at its first Leningrad performance on 9 August 1942, while the city was still under siege, the symphony was greeted with euphoric enthusiasm. The commentator at the live radio broadcast described the concert: "The whole hall stood up during the finale. You couldn't stay seated and listen. It was impossible."
