Danny Brown (born 16 March 1981) is an alternative hip-hop recording artist, hailing from Detroit, Michigan, who has achieved success with his several releases since 2010.
Well known for his outlandish lyrics, which often involve a voyeuristic view into his excessive recreational drug use and what he gets up to in the bedroom, Danny Brown has built up a reputation as an outsider in the hip hop industry, often using producers not associated with mainstream rap such as Rustie and BadBadNotGood.
The MC, whose real name is Daniel Dewan Sewell, found fame later on in his career, after spending his formative years dreaming of becoming a wealthy rapper, he found himself on the crime-laden streets of Detroit selling drugs, before a mildly successful stint with hip-hop group “ Rese'vor Dogs”.
He became known to rap fans in 2010 when he recorded “Hawaiian Snow” with G-Unit Records member Tony Yayo. After brief fruitless flirtations with 50 Cent’s aforementioned label (there were disagreements on Brown’s image) and a string of independent mixtapes, he released his debut album “The Hybrid, his first project to feature his now distinct high pitched nasal vocal style.
As the album generated a buzz online, Brown garnered the attention of Brooklyn’s Fools Gold records, founded by former Kanye West tour DJ A-Trak, who signed him and distributed his second, critically acclaimed, release “XXX” in 2011. Many reviewers cited the album as an indication of the future of hip-hop in the Internet age.
Following on from the success of XXX, Brown quickly got to work on a follow up project. The result was this third and most recent album, “Old”, titled so in reference to his elder status amongst his younger peers in the current wave of Internet rappers, which was a commercial and critical success, reaching #18 on the Billboard charts.
Often seen dancing wildly with his lounge out on stage, Danny Brown has brought his rock star like performances world at various festivals such as Coachella and Glastonbury, He also recently toured with frequent collaborators, A$AP Rocky and Schoolboy Q. Of course true to Danny’s “weirdo rapper” status he has also also performed and recorded unlikely indie artists such as Vampire Weekend and Purity Ring.
Read moreIf you want to go to the most exciting, energy-filled concert of your life, Danny Brown is the way to go! Danny Brown dedicates his entire time on the stage to making the concert as insane as possible. It starts out with an opening act coming on stage. After that comes yet another opening act. And then another one! The fact that Danny waits so long to come on stage just amplifies the excitement brewing in everybody. It makes them not be able to wait to see him perform, so that when he does come onstage, everybody goes crazy, and i feel like that is a reason why this concert has more energy than any concert ive ever been to. People were jumping up and down and dancing throughout the entire venue. The bass was so loud that my ears were ringing the entire way home! Danny Brown hasn't been in the public eye for long. I started listening to him about a year before he really got discovered. So seeing him live was amazing because he is one of my favorite rappers of all time. His style has evolved over those years. With his first album, "The Hybrid," he rapped about partying, girls, and living in poverty. With his second and most acclaimed album, "XXX," he did pretty much the same thing, except it was really raw, real, and honest. He told stories about his life and did it in a way that brought people in and made them connect to him in a way. Also the beats produced by his friend and producer, Skywlkr, were truly a work of art and enhanced to the listening experience greatly. Skywlkr is also the DJ at the shows, and he is great live, too. In his newest album, "Old," he changes his style to songs that sound more like they were supposed to be played at a club than his other albums. He seems to lose his sense of "originality" that he built up over the course of his first two albums. I didn't really enjoy his last album, but even if you didn't enjoy his latest album, those same songs that i hated on the recorded version of the album were some of the most intense and energy-filled points of the concert. I think that those songs were meant to be played in a live environment. He is definitely an artist whose show you do not want to miss if he is in town. His shows are also relatively cheap. I got an email from Songkick saying that he was coming to town, and im glad i signed up for Songkick, because it said he was coming to town for $25! But overall, the concert was incredibly memorable and if you have the chance to go, do NOT pass it up.
One of the most charismatic rappers on the hip hop circuit, Danny Brown, real name Daniel Dewan Sewell does not take himself too seriously onstage and his crowd really responds to this. His cheeky, endearing personality means that he builds instant rapport with the huge audience before he even opens his mouth. Therefore the reaction to a slick rendition of 'Molly Ringwald' gets an even more momentous reaction. The sheer size does not seem to phase him as he takes it all within his stride.
Brown jovially moves from side to side of stage and continues to enthusiastically jumps in time with the crowd and the beat whilst delivering 'Blueberry (Pills and Cocaine)' note perfect. His huge afro-like hair bouncing all the time and for many further back it is all that is visible.
His experimental collaboration with Purity Ring, '25 Bucks' goes down particularly well and demonstrates why he is considered to be one of the most innovative performers in hip hop. A bass heavy version of 'Dip' keeps the crowds moving one last time and leaves them with the impression Danny is set for huge things.
So I just saw Danny Brown at Camp Flog Gnaw in Los Angeles and I've gotta say... that was by far the most hectic show I have ever attended. I've seen guys like Travis Scott and Vic Mensa, but Danny made them look like boy scouts. The DJ he had came out to warm the crowd up for about 15 minutes and just played banger after banger after banger. The crowd was already buzzing but the DJ got everyone even more excited. When Danny came out everyone just went nuts, and it was such a great time. Go see Danny Brown
P.S. The visuals are great (understatement).
Danny puts on a good ass show man every penny spent was sooooo worth it. I've never had a show make me move around like mad man before but this Danny Brown one sure as hell did. I had no voice afterwards, I was sweating like crazy, and I could not hear lol if anybody wants to go to an amazing rap concert, it's Danny Brown for sure
He's amazing. Definitely would see again. He played a lot of songs I didn't expect and preformed with a lot of energy. Also got a free DB sticker at the door. Was wishing it wasn't over when it was. The lights were also some of the best I've seen.
Great concert, Danny was a great stage presence and the openers had amazing energy and intensity. The setlist had a lot of hits, newer stuff, and much older stuff. Highly recommend seeing him if you get a chance!
'twas mad. Like, really really good. Like, reeeeeaaaaaally good.
Christ it was so good. It was just so good. Like, on another level type good. Danny Brown is the fucking madman.
