Biography

  • Influenced by the likes of Amon Tobin, J Dilla, A Tribe Called Quest, and DJ Shadow, Henry Laufer - aka Shlohmo - crafts nuanced downtempo beats outlined by exciting and spontaneous electronica textures.

Shlohmo has established himself as a key member in the burgeoning Los Angeles DJ/electronica scene. His name is often seen in tandem with D33J, Ryan Hemsworth, and Flying Lotus and his sound is highly comparable to the chillwave era style of Baths and Teebs.

Laufer started composing music as early as age 14 and by 17 he began to develop a strong sense of direction, penning sweeping electronica orchestrations in the vein of Nujabes and J-Roc. As a youth he received inspiration from artists performing at the electronic music night club, Low End Theory and with his rise in the music scene, he has since been a featured musician at the club. Additionally Shlohmo co-founded the Internet label, the Wedidit collection when he was still in high school.

Laufer has proven himself to be a proficient studio artist as well as a performer, releasing a total of 3 EPs between 2009 and 2010 before putting out his full length debut “Bad Vibes” in 2011. He released yet another EP in 2011 and followed that up with 2012’s “Vacation”, 2013’s “Laid Out”, and 2014’s “No More”.

Laufer is not only renowned for his solo project Shlohmo, he has also attracted positive attention from his remixes. He has reworked tracks of artists ranging from New Zealand based DJ/producer Flume to pop-experimentalist Tomas Barford.

Laufer’s most publicized remix was his revision of “Fuck U All the Time”, a track by hip-hop/ R&B singer Jeremih. This collaboration led to a rekindled partnership with Jeremih for the release of “Bo Peep (Do U Right)”. This track was highly successful and went on to be featured on both Yours Truly and Adidas Originals’ 2013 “Songs from Scratch”. The hype from this song led to a collaborative EP between Jeremih and Shlohmo, which was released in 2014 through Def Jam Recordings. The EP generated a fair amount of buzz in response to the premiere of the single “No More” on NPR.

Additionally Laufer has collaborated with ambient soul experimentalist How To Dress Well and has done production work for Flash Bank Grenada and Banks.

Live reviews

  • Shlohmo

A shlohmo DJ sets is just a fantastic sonic experience. His use of field recordings and lo-fi textures to construct abstractly infectious and shuffling beats cannot fail to trigger some sort of response - although it’s not everyone’s cup of tea! He caters to a generation that has been exposed to dubstep, both minimal and popular, but refrains from packing his tracks full of crude and squelchy wobbles. Shlomo’s delicately layered compositions are perfect for a down tempo laid back night out, sometimes featuring distorted vocal chops that provide the crowd with the illusion of sensical utterances. Depending on the atmosphere at the venue, he will mix in some relevant and well chosen beats by other artists to add some variety to his set. It is safe to say that this lad is a truly talented producer and one that I would encourage you to check out if you have the opportunity… His track ‘places’ is a particular favourite of mine!

  • Henry Laufer, better known by his stage name Shlohmo, is a Californian electronic musician who has only been on the circuit for a few years yet he is making serious waves with both his sound and the way in which he conducts a live show.

The immediate and consequential nature of his electro really does resonate with the crowds and although there is an emphasis to keep the masses dancing, there are moments of real cinematic quality where everybody's arms are raised high to the screeching sounds. When Laufer drops Banks - 'Brain' a similar effect is achieved as it is both dramatic and danceable, this is where Shlohmo has a lot of skill. He is also not against really getting involved with the audience, often mixing his final track from within the crowd as he focuses on the laptop while everybody else dances around him. It is trippy, unpredictable and above all fun, exactly what a dance music show should be.

  • It was a great show! Really cool lights, and the performance set the mood just right. Also, unlike when Kendrick Lamar does it, the live percussion by the drummer really added to the overall feel of the music and mad for a more live and realistic feel to the music.

The only disappointment was that he didn't play any music from his colab with Jeremih! It was such a good album, and I don't really get why no song off that was played. But otherwise, great concert :)
