Biografie

  • The Ting Tings are a British duo from Salford, Greater Manchester, UK. Their music encompasses a range of genres, including synthpop, indie rock, dance-punk and new wave.

The band consists of multi-instrumentalists Katie White (vocals, guitar, bass and piano) and Jules De Martino (drums, vocals, lead guitar and keyboards). The pair first met in 2001 when White was part of pop-punk trio TKO, as De Martino was one of the songwriters for the band. White and De Martino were later reunited when they bumped into each other in Manchester and discovered they had a mutual love of Portishead, leading them to form a band called Dear Eskiimo (yes, with two I’s) with friend Steven Templeman. The trio signed a deal with Mercury Records but later split due to a change of personnel at the record label.

In 2006, whilst White and De Martino were both working at Islington Mill Studios (White as a bartender, De Martino as a producer), the music and performers of the Islington Mill community inspired them to regroup as a duo and develop their own sound. Their band name “The Ting Tings” came from White’s workmate called Ting Ting, who told her that in Mandarin, it sounded like the pronunciation of “bandstand”. The name also means “the sound of innovation on an open mind”. Spiritual!

The newly-formed duo quickly formed a buzz round them, with record producers like Rick Rubin asking for tickets to see the band live during their early days on the Manchester party scene. The band signed to local indie label Switchflicker Records and released their debut single “That’s Not My Name” in the spring of 2007, and later that year signed to major-label Columbia Records after performing at Glastonbury on the BBC Introducing Stage. In May 2008, “That’s Not My Name” was released again through Columbia and went straight to number one in the UK Singles Chart, followed swiftly by the release of their debut album “We Started Nothing” which also reached number one. Their follow-up album “Sounds from Nowheresville” was released in 2012 and a third album “Super Critical” is also in the pipeline.

The Ting Tings are known for their energetic live shows and quirky music videos, leading them to win three awards at the 2008 UK Festival Awards, including Best Festival Pop Act and an MTV video award in 2008 for “Shut Up and Let Me Go”. The band performed a section of the song with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker at the awards ceremony. The Ting Tings have also been nominated for a Grammy and two BRIT Awards. Most notably, the duo won an Ivor Novello Award in 2009 for their album “We Started Nothing”.

Live-Bewertungen

  • If there's one thing British indie rock/pop darlings The Ting Tings excel at, it's making you want to dance all night long. Even though the group only consists of two people, they bring the energy of two thousand.

Drummer and backing vocalist Jules de Martino provides a steady, yet powerful beat, while lead singer Katie White sings and dances her heart out, contributes sleek guitar and keyboard riffs, and encourages the audience to dance and sing along with her whenever she has a moment. The flashy colors of the musicians' outfits mix well with the stage lighting and manage to expertly create the illusion of a bouncing British nightclub, even though they're actually playing for thousands at a large outdoor festival.

While the band covers all of the highlights of their two studio albums, a particular highlight is their performance of "Shut Up and Let Me Go," of 2008 iPod commercial fame. Katie tells the audience that "they have her permission to dance," launches into the funky, punky dance-rock tune, and closes the song out with pounding her bass drum to a rocking conclusion.

The good times continue into the last song of the night, the soaring power-pop signature tune "That's Not My Name." While "fun" may not be her name, Katie and her band-mate truly are experts at making the concert experience as fun as possible.

  • British indie/electro duo The Ting Tings make one hell of a great sound for just two musicians. Katie White and Jules De Martino have had a varied career, their debut album went to the top of the UK charts and spawned hit singles 'That's Not My Name' and 'Shut Up & Let Me Go'. They won countless awards for their innovative pop sound yet the musicians themselves weren't happy with the radio friendly direction in which they were heading.

Deciding to retreat to Berlin, they returned with a complex and experimental second album which failed commercially but succeeded in its purpose to free the band from the pop constraints. This freedom is applied to the live show as you get the feeling the setlist is rather fluid before each show, surprisingly the hits such as 'Great DJ' and 'Shut Up & Let Me Go' do make the cut and the crowd cheers wildly for them.

They also demonstrate their technical ability on new material such as 'Green Poison' and 'Only Love'. The Ting Tings have had complete contrast with success within their first three albums and as the final bars of pop-heavy 'Hands' finish both the audience and the band leave with a sense of optimism and confusion for the future.

  • Super fun and talented band with a great mix of Rick, pop and electro. Thalia Hall's acoustics were super sharp and not too loud. The concert felt a little bit short but packed a good punch : )

  • First time seeing them live and I must say THEY DO NOT DISAPPOINT. The gig is vibrant and really upbeat. Worth going even if you don't know the band/songs all that well.
