Home Market Releases for July 28th, 2015

July 27, 2015

MST3K

It is a terrible week for limited releases. There is only one first-run release, Home, but its reviews were only mixed. The next biggest release, Justice League: Gods and Monsters, is a direct-to-DVD animated movie. That's a huge drop in sales potential. Neither of those releases are contenders for Pick of the Week. The best new releases are Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXXIII and White God on DVD or Blu-ray. It was a close call, but in the end I went with MST3K.

2015 NBA Championship: Highlights - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Real fans want full games, not just highlights.

2015 Stanley Cup Champions - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Real fans want full games, not just highlights.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: 009 Re: Cyborg - Anime Movie, 3 Hearts, Cherry 2000, The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein, Ghost Town, Inari Kon Kon: The Complete Series, Jauja, Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau, Miracle Mile, Monte Walsh, No Game, No Life, Prime Cut, and WWE: The Kliq Rules
The only secondary Blu-ray release that really jumps out is Lost Soul. If you like documentaries about troubled movies, then this one is a must have.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Home
Just the one 3D release this week, but it is the best-selling new release this week.

Comet - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A romantic comedy starring Justin Long and Emmy Rossum. It earned mixed reviews and barely made a peep at the box office. This is the kind of release that would normally be too small to mention, even as filler, but if I ignored all of those releases on this week's list, there would be only four or five releases here.

Helix: Season Two - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A Sci-fi TV series from Syfy. It earned great reviews, but was canceled after just two seasons.

Home - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack or 3D Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is by far the biggest new release of the week, as it earned just over $175 million domestically, On the other hand, its reviews are merely mixed. Then again, that's still fine for a kids movie and if you have kids in the right age group, it is worth checking out. Add in the number of extras on the DVD and the Blu-ray and it is worth buying over just renting.

Justice League: Gods and Monsters - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Usually these releases earn good reviews and sell quite well. They are selling well according to Amazon.com, but there are are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. That's not a good sign.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXXIII - Buy from Amazon: DVD
One of my favorite TV shows of all time. I've reviewed several releases in the past, but it has been a long time since I've gotten a screener. Eventually they will run out of good episodes, but I'm sure that will be a while.

Naruto Shippuden Uncut: Set 23 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
One of the few Anime franchises that have a large enough following here to routinely appear near the top of Amazon.com's list of best-selling new releases.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon: Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life, Blackbird, Comic Book Independents, The Encore of Tony Duran, Escort, Fear Not, Four Blood Moons, Halloween Home Haunts, Hot Pursuit, Marie's Story, Our Daily Poison, and Unfriended
Of the secondary VOD releases coming out this week, the only one of interest is Four Blood Moons, because I need those to go in my mono-red burn deck. ... That's a little Magic the Gathering humor there.

White God - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This movie is set in Hungary and it is about mixed-breed dog abandoned after the government institutes a Mongrel Tax. The dog sets out to be reunited with its owner and along the way attracts a number of other abandoned dogs as followers. The reviews are amazing at it was even selected as Hungary's official Oscar selection. Extras are better than most foreign-language releases with a behind-the-scenes featurette and two interview featurettes. It is easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.
