My Man Godfrey

This week, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is coming out on DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Combo Pack and not surprisingly, it is scaring away the competition and it is the only significant first-run release of the week. Unfortunately, it is not a Pick of the Week contender, so we have to look to smaller releases My Man Godfrey is a classic and Supergirl: Season Three is still fun. There are also some Anime titles worth considering, including Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Complete Series and Gosick: The Complete Series. It was close, but My Man Godfrey won in the end.

American Horror Story: Season Seven - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I reviewed the first season, but I didn’t like it as much as other critics did and I have since stopped watching the show. Its reviews for this season are among the weakest for the show’s run so far, so keep that in mind.

Anne of Green Gables Fire and Dew - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
As a Canadian, am I legally required to love this show. The reviews for this TV movie are really good, so if you like period pieces, it is worth checking out. Also coming out is the double-shot, which is a good deal.

Cabin Boy - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Some might describe this as a cult classic. That might be overstating things a little. However, for fans of Chris Elliott’s sense of humor, it is worth checking out. The film bombed in theaters, but the Blu-ray includes a new audio commentary track and a new interview, as well as old extras. That’s a lot more than I would have expected.

Damsel - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This limited release earned good reviews, but not great reviews, while it struggled in limited release. This explains why it is only coming out on DVD. It is worth checking out, but perhaps rent it on VOD first.

Fahrenheit 451 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
The screener for this just arrived. I’ll try to get to it as soon as possible, but new screeners take precedent.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I hated Jurassic World, but this film has to be better, right? Is it truly good? Or just a step in the right direction? Read our review for my opinion.

Also coming out this week is the franchise 4K Box Set.

Lethal Weapon: The Complete Second Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This show has earned good reviews so far, but behind-the-scene issues could mess that up going forward. Hopefully it will actually get better with the casting change.

Looker - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
I’m not sure why this is selling so well. Its reviews are terrible and it wasn’t a hit when it hit theaters in the 1980s. It shouldn’t be a top ten seller, even during a shallow week like this.

Macgyver: Season 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The reviews say nope, but the ratings show that those who gave it a chance during the first season stuck around for season two.

Madam Secretary: Season Four - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This show’s ratings took a hit this past year; however, this could be because it switched from 9 pm to 10 pm and not because of a sudden drop in quality.

The Miniaturist - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The show’s reviews are good, but not up to the Masterpiece title. That said, if you like period pieces, it is worth checking out.

Murdoch Mysteries: Home for the Holidays - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Great show, but it is still too early for Christmas releases.

My Man Godfrey: Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is the 1936 original, which is widely considered a classic. It is a Criterion Collection release, so you know the extras are good (audio commentary track, radio drama version, etc.). It is certainly worth picking up and it is even a contender for Pick of the Week.

Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
An Anime about a man who challenges a god to a battle of wits and ends up reincarnated as a preteen girl, Tanya. However, he uses his military knowledge to rise in the military as Tanya. The reviews are amazing and even with weak extras (commercials, promos, clean openings and closings) it is worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Step By Step: The Complete Second Season - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Normally I don’t talk about catalog TV on DVD releases, but it is a really slow week and this DVD makes the cut.

Supergirl: Season Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is my favorite series in the CW’s Arrowverse. Granted, this season was the weakest of the three, but it is still one of the best releases on this week’s list and a contender for Pick of the Week.

The X-files: Season 11 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The reboot of this classic show has been, well, fine. Just fine. The show is good when they do mysteries, but the shows that build the mythology are the worst parts of the season, just like with Season 10.

Twin Star Exorcists: Part Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
There are a lot of good Anime titles in the list of secondary Blu-ray releases; Assassination Classroom: Season Two, Gosick: The Complete Series, and Twin Star Exorcists: Part Two are all worth picking up. So is Bat*21 and Papillon.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Jurassic Park Franchise Box Set - No Reviews - 4K Combo Pack
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Combo Pack
Looking back, there’s only one truly good installment in this franchise.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Magnum P.I. - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Octopus - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
There’s a Magnum P.I. remake starting soon. I think I will stay with the original.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
29 to Life - Reviews - Video on Demand
American Dresser - Reviews - Video on Demand
Color Me You - Reviews - Video on Demand
Diane - Reviews - Video on Demand
The First Purge - Reviews - Video on Demand
Viva Kino! - Reviews - Video on Demand
The First Purge is the only first-run release among the secondary VOD titles this week. It’s not the best film here, but it is by far the biggest.
