Barry wins England call-up

This article is more than 21 years old

Aston Villa defender Gareth Barry has been called into the England squad to face South Africa.

Barry has been in the international wilderness for the past two-and-a-half years but coach Sven-Goran Eriksson today drafted the 22-year-old into his squad for the friendly in Durban on Thursday.

England's squad had been hit by injuries and Barry comes in following Danny Murphy's neck problem.

Eriksson told the Football Association website, www.thefa.com: "Following the injuries we have suffered to players in the squad, I have today called Gareth Barry up from the Under-21s.

"Gareth has had a very good season with Aston Villa and he can play in a number of positions.

"I am looking forward to him joining up with the squad."

Barry made his international debut three years ago under Kevin Keegan in England's 2-0 friendly win over Ukraine at Wembley.

He went on to earn six international caps but has found himself frozen out in recent years under Eriksson.

But he has made himself a mainstay of the England Under-21 side, earning 23 caps and scoring twice for David Platt's side.

The former Brighton player - who moved to the midlands in 1997 - has impressed for his club side too and has become one of Villa's most consistent performers on the left, a problem area for England in recent years.
