Families shot at Nigeria kidnapping reunion

At least one person was shot dead and others were injured by police in Nigeria when a drawn-out official ceremony to mark the return of nearly 300 kidnapped schoolgirls turned violent.

A crowd of the girls’ parents and supporters, demanding to be immediately reunited with their children, were hit by bullets and tear gas after they interrupted speeches and threw stones at visiting dignitaries. One person was shot in the stomach outside the girls’ school in the northwestern state of Zamfara as parents were kept waiting for the local chief to finish speaking.

“It is infuriating for [officials] to say they had to finish their speeches before handing over our children to us. This is outrageous,” one mother said as she was finally reunited
