In February 1960 three stories made headlines around the world. Harold Macmillan made his “wind of change” speech; Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita had its world premiere; and on February 19 Prince Andrew Albert Christian Edward was born in the Belgian suite at Buckingham Palace. Named after his paternal grandfather, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, he was the Queen’s second son, third child and reputed favourite. Speaking about him to her biographer years later, Princess Diana, who had known him since childhood, drew a character sketch.
