The entire time I played Monster Hunter World on the PS4 back in January, I wished I could have a similar experience on the Nintendo Switch. Now, Capcom is making that happen... sort of. Today, the developer announced the series’s debut on Nintendo’s tablet in North America, but it isn’t a port of World. Instead, it’s a follow-up to the 2016 Nintendo 3DS game Monster Hunter Generations; the sequel already launched in Japan last year under the name Monster Hunter XX. It will be called Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate when it debuts in English.

While it’s great to see the series shift to the Switch, fans of World should be careful. While that game merged the iconic Monster Hunter gameplay with a structure that felt more fluid and modern, Generations is a much more classic Monster Hunter game. It’s great for existing fans of the series, but it’s not the best entry point for newcomers. Here’s how Capcom describes the setup:

Hunters can face off against the series’ largest roster of unique monsters in this nostalgic look back at the series’ beginnings and evolutions. Take on the role of a brave hunter on an adrenaline-fueled adventure challenging larger-than-life beasts. Completing quests will yield valuable resources for crafting countless distinct weapons and equipment fashioned after players’ defeated foes. Along their journey, hunters must defend each of the game’s four villages from major threats known as the Fated Four, plus an even more dangerous new Elder Dragon.

Generations Ultimate will be on show at E3 next month, and the game will make its debut on the Switch on August 28th. In the meantime, you can check out an early glimpse in the debut trailer below.
