About Mary Jane on Broadway

See Academy Award nominee and 2024 Tony Award nominee Rachel McAdams give "the best performance of the Broadway season" (USA Today) in her Broadway debut. Get Mary Jane tickets and experience an intimate, compassionate play by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony nominee Amy Herzog, a New York Times Critic's Pick now nominated for three Tonys, including Best Play.

The star of Spotlight, The Notebook, and more takes on the title role of a single mother caring for her chronically ill son. She relies on her tireless optimism, humor, and a diverse group of women — including her building superintendent, a Facebook friend, and a nurse — to maintain her hope as she deals with a difficult situation. A meaningful story of community and perseverance against the odds, Mary Jane is a "visceral, powerful, and beautiful" story, the Chicago Tribune raves.

Universally acclaimed by critics and audiences who give standing ovations night after night, this Broadway premiere shines with McAdams alongside Herzog, recently acclaimed for her Tony-nominated A Doll's House adaptation starring Jessica Chastain, and Tony-nominated director Anne Kauffman.

More information about Mary Jane on Broadway

Mary Jane on Broadway showcases the highs and lows of a single mother caring for her young toddler, who lives with cerebral palsy and other health issues. She leans on women of various ages, backgrounds, and experiences for friendship and help, creating a found family for herself and her son.

The Mary Jane play premiered in 2017 at the Yale Repertory Theatre. During its subsequent Off-Broadway run at New York Theatre Workshop, Carrie Coon played Mary Jane, receiving an Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award nomination for her performance.

This time around, the star is McAdams, who you may know from her roles in Mean Girls, Spotlight, and The Notebook. Mary Jane is her first Broadway credit, so you're witnessing a major milestone in her career!

Her director, Anne Kauffman, returns to Broadway less than a year after staging the Tony-nominated revival of The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window, starring Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan, on and off Broadway.

What to watch for

  • Audiences never see Mary Jane's son. Beeps, suction sounds, and medical equipment suggest his presence.
  • The style of this play is unique. Herzog wrote most of Mary Jane as various conversations between Mary Jane and the people who come and go from her home.
  • Mary Jane's support circle varies in background and age, including women as young as 21 and as old as 70, a Buddhist nun, and a college student.
  • Amy Herzog is having a moment on Broadway. After adapting Ibsen's A Doll's House for Broadway in 2023, she's adapting his An Enemy of the People in 2024. Jeremy Strong stars in the Broadway production, opening shortly before Mary Jane.
