- Maybe you could try a distinct string property with HTML format or a TeX one. --- Jura 13:50, 10 March 2019 (UTC)
- I would like that, too. Toni 001 (talk) 02:18, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Swpb, Jura1: I proposed a replacement property with "math" datatype: Wikidata:Property proposal/quantity symbol Toni 001 (talk) 21:55, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
- I'm not really sure where Wikidata:Property proposal/quantity symbol went. As math datatype isn't of much use in many context, I don't think we should replace this. --- Jura 10:38, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hello @Jura1: Please see values of P7973, many of which can't be entered correctly in P416:
- Try it!
select ?item (sample(?label) as ?label) (sample(?symbol) as ?symbol) where { ?item wdt:P7973 ?symbol . ?item rdfs:label ?label . filter (lang(?label) = "en") } group by ?item
- This should clearly demonstrate the utility of P7973. Toni 001 (talk) 10:49, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- There are still cases where this isn't needed at all.
- The problem is that users can't really extract those reliably from Wikidata with the usual tools. Handling of math datatype at Wikidata is a bit like PDFs at some places.
- An alternate solution could be to add TeX string (P1993) as qualifier to quantity symbol (LaTeX) (P7973). --- Jura 10:55, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Jura1: There are currently 16 properties with math datatype. Are you suggesting that for each of the we maintain a "shadow property" with string datatype? Toni 001 (talk) 10:59, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- I think each needs to be looked at. At some point, math datatype is the only datatype where the number of statements actually decreased. --- Jura 11:01, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- In this case the use of P7973 (math datatype) in only ever going to increase. There the utility of P416 (string datatype) is limited by what can be expressed using Unicode. To not confuse users, P416 should not stand there un-qualified, but it should be reflected in the label that this is not the "main" property for expressing symbols. If you are opposed to "DEPRECATED", then at least we could indicate the datatype in the label. Toni 001 (talk) 13:37, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- Sure np. Maybe it's even better to make this a qualifier of quantity symbol (LaTeX) (P7973). --- Jura 13:45, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- I hesitate a bit on that last point. Maybe for existing users not. --- Jura 13:47, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
