Genre

Please refer, e.g., to w:en:List_of_genres. The WP list of genres does not include the novel as a genre because it is a form rather than a genre. The novel is defined by its length, not by its style. That is why there are detective novels and detective short stories; horror novels and horror short stories; historical novels and historical short stories, and so forth. All of the things considered to be genres, and listed in the WP list I mention, can appear in novels or in other forms of literature. But a novel is defined by the fact that it is a certain length and is probably divided into chapters.

We go through this discussion every few months. There is a discussion on the novel data item at at Wikiproject:Books, among other places. --EncycloPetey (talk) 17:42, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
