Merging items

[edit]

Hallo NeverDoING,

For merging items, you may want to use the merge.js gadget from help page about merging. It has an option "Request deletion for extra items on RfD" to automatically place a request to delete the emptied page. This way of nominating makes it a lot easier for the admins to process the requests.

some help tools

[edit]

Hi NeverDoING! You may add some help tools to user:NeverDoING/common.js . Please see User:Rotsaert8000 (in Esperanto), Wikidata:Tools, and Wikidata:Tools/User scripts. On the user:i18n-page you will see all WD gadget links. It takes time to see what fits most of your interests. Good luck gangLeri לערי ריינהארט (talk) 19:21, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Items about humans

[edit]

If you create items about humans, could you please add instance of (P31)human (Q5)? This would help a lot! Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 08:27, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Categories are a wikimedia creation, so ...

[edit]

Categories are a wikimedia creation, so they don't get VIAF identifiers/controls, etc., all those identifiers/controls belong on the subject only.  — billinghurst sDrewth 05:01, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi NeverDoING, somehow the name seems odd. It's only used on Katherine Douglas Smith (Q54863468). How do we know that Douglas is one of her given names and not a surname? Even if it's a given name, it's a separate name. So P735 would just have two values. I'd replace it with "Katherine" and delete the item. As I don't have any data on "Douglas", I wouldn't add if for now. What do you think? BTW, thanks for your most helpful contributions to names in general. --- Jura 09:29, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Works vs Editions

[edit]

Hello NeverDoING. Thank you for contributing to Wikidata. I appreciate your work here.

I saw that you added s:en:The Roman Breviary to Roman Breviary (Q19894488). This is not correct because s:en:The Roman Breviary is an edition, not a work, but Roman Breviary (Q19894488) is a work, not an edition.

I have fixed it for you. I split Roman Breviary (Q19894488) into three different items. The three items are:

  1. Roman Breviary (Q19894488) is a breviary (a liturgical work), written in Latin in 1568 with subsequent modified editions since that date.
  2. The Roman Breviary (Q67197093) is a translation of that breviary, written in English by John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, and first published in 1908
  3. The Roman Breviary (Q67197055) is the first edition of Bute's translation, published 1908 by William Blackwood and Sons, and is linked to s:en:The Roman Breviary

In the future, please create separate Wikidata items for each of the following:

  • The original work
  • Each translation of the work
  • Each published copy of the original work
  • Each published copy of a translation of the work.

You can read more about these rules at WD:Wikisource/How to help. I can also answer questions. Beleg Tâl (talk)

Turkish names

[edit]

Hi. Please do not "invent" names or surnames in languages you do not know. Your invention of Hanim (Q88209141) has no sense. Of course if it is what I think. In Turkish "hanım" means lady, madam, Ms etc. User:Simon Villeneuve used it for Belkıs Şevket Hanım (Q20476741). This lady died before the Surname Law was enacted in Turkey. In those years women used to use the "given name" (not the non-existent surname) of their father or husband to be identified. This is not a "surname" as we know it today, but in those years served "as if" it were. "Hanım" (and not "Hanim") is not a name or surname. P.D. If you opened this item for some other language surname, forget my lecture. You should always enter the "language" of names, BTW. --E4024 (talk) 05:34, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello NeverDoING!

Please stop this nonsense, this person has two double names combined with a dash. If you have any questions about problems, please contact Wikidata_talk: WikiProject_Names. --HarryNº2 (talk) 07:15, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Stop it or there will be trouble. This is the last clue, otherwise I'll report you for vandalism. --HarryNº2 (talk) 11:02, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

don't merge

[edit]

Hi NeverDoING, please don't merge seperated items like this and that. I'd reverted because both differnt subjects. thx --Derzno (talk) 12:47, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Affixed family names in Germany in relation to Konrad von Rabenau (Q1782458)

[edit]

You are confusing the sorting of a name and its spelling. For your information: Titles of nobility such as „von“, „von den“, „von der“, etc. belong to the family name. When sorting, however, these are added to the given name. Example:

  • Name: Peter von Mustermann
  • Given name: Peter
  • Family name: von Mustermann
  • Defaultsort: Mustermann, Peter von

For more information about what is officially a family name in Germany see the website of Bundesministerium des Innern: Familiennamen mit ehemaligen Adelsbezeichnungen – Seit 1919 sind die ehemaligen Adelsbezeichnungen Bestandteil des Familiennamens.

Incorrectly inferring names from labels

[edit]

Hi, you have added family name (P734) "Szamotuł" to Wacław of Szamotuły (Q772603). It seems to me that you did it, thinking the label "Wacław z Szamotuł" is structured "<first name> z <last name>". This is wrong, the label is "<first name> z <place of birth>". "Z Szamotuł" simply means "of Szamotuły". Most likely this person did not have any last name at all. Please be careful not to add incorrect data to items based on labels originating from languages you do not speak. --Tengwar (talk) 21:38, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New family names and given names

[edit]

Hi NeverDoING!

It's nice of you to create new names. Please fill out at least these three Properties of information, this saves a lot of work for the other Wikidata contributors:

  • For names in Latin script:
  1. instance of (P31) (use "family name (Q101352)", "male given name (Q12308941)" or "female given name (Q11879590)")
  2. writing system (P282) (use "Latin script (Q8229)")
  3. native label (P1705) (use allways "mul" for the language specification; specific language specifications require a reference)

The easiest way would be to use the script from User:Bargioni, see: User:Bargioni/QuickNames

  1. instance of (P31) (use "family name (Q101352)", "male given name (Q12308941)" or "female given name (Q11879590)")
  2. writing system (P282) (use "Cyrillic script (Q8209)")
  3. native label (P1705) (use allways "mul" for the language specification; specific language specifications require a reference)

Note: The transliteration from e.g. Russian (Q7737)/Ukrainian (Q8798)/Serbian (Q9299) etc. to English (Q1860), French (Q150), German (Q188) and various other languages is different.

For more information please see this page: Wikidata:WikiProject Names/Properties.

I wish you continued happy work on Wikidata. Best regards, HarryNº2 (talk) 05:02, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikisource stuff as it feeds to WD

[edit]

Hi. The work The Paradise (Q114613153) would be an instance of version, edition or translation (Q3331189) per WD:Books as each published edition is its own item. I have updated it. I find the WEF tool of great assistance to get these done a little more thoroughly.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:40, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Many people have more than one family name

[edit]

Please do not create "given names" that are just family names used before another family name. StarTrekker (talk) 03:18, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Careful

[edit]

"Kristine" != "Kirstine" (which is why there was a "different from" field at the bottom there).

(Also, the "born in 1958" detail should have made you suspicious about the photo from c. 1897). DS (talk) 13:31, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Q129263663 - Norman is not a female given name

[edit]

It appears you created Norman (Q129263663) as a "Female given name" for Cherith Norman Chalet (Q126370079). However, Norman is actually her maiden surname: her father is Scott Norman and her husband is George Chalet. I will merge Norman (Q129263663) with Norman (Q1218555). Watch out for maiden names that resemble middle names. If you can find a woman with the first name Norman, that might be a different story. -Animalparty (talk) 03:33, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
