Moose season comes to an end in Texas

Staff 1 minute read Thursday, Apr. 25, 2024

The Manitoba Moose’s season ended Thursday.

The American Hockey League club was swept in the best-of-three Central Division play-in series after being blanked 2-0 by the Texas Stars at H-E-B Centre.

It was the third season in a row that the club lost in its first playoff series.

Fredrik Karlström scored both goals for the hosts, opening the scoring in the first period and adding some insurance in the third.

The Manitoba Moose know how to saddle up in Texas. The American Hockey League club experienced success in the Lone Star State during the regular season but will need more as it begins the Calder Cup playoffs with a best-of-three series against the Texas Stars staged entirely at H-E-B Centre.

Moose make miraculous run to playoffs

Joshua Frey-Sam 6 minute read Monday, Apr. 15, 2024

The Manitoba Moose could breathe easy for the first time in three months.

The American Hockey League club took the ice for Sunday’s regular-season home finale against the Iowa Wild having already secured a playoff berth less than 24 hours earlier.

The Wild, who narrowly escaped with a 4-3 victory following a three-goal surge by the hosts in the final frame, may have spoiled the Moose’s final home game, but Manitoba could rest assured their improbable path to the post-season was complete.

“It means a lot,” said defenceman Ashton Sautner. “We’ve been through a lot. We had a stretch there that none of us wanted to be in but we dug deep as a group and it showed a lot about our team. In my years of playing, I never went through something like that but the way we came out of it and where we’re sitting now is pretty remarkable so you have to be proud of that.

Reichel fills hat as Moose clinch playoff berth

Staff 1 minute read Saturday, Apr. 13, 2024

The Manitoba Moose are heading to the AHL playoffs.

Manitoba clinched a spot in the post-season with a combination of Saturday’s 7-4 win over the visiting Iowa Wild and the Chicago Wolves’ 3-1 loss to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Kristian Reichel had a hat trick and one assist as the hometown Moose improved to 32-33-2-1.

The Moose reached the post-season for the third consecutive season with four games remaining in the regular season to round out the field for the Central Division.

Manitoba begins its quest for the Calder Cup in a best-of-three first-round series with the Texas Stars. That schedule is to be determined.

Barlow takes next step

Colby Barlow was known as “Captain” the last two years with his junior team.

He was “Rookie” on Wednesday.

The Winnipeg Jets forward prospect got his first taste of pro action as he skated with his new Manitoba Moose teammates for the first time since being reassigned from the Owen Sound Attack last week.

The puck moved faster, the bumps into the boards were a little heavier and the practice was a little tougher than what the 19-year-old was used to, he said.

Morning, afternoon, night — the Manitoba Moose are winning hockey games at all hours these days. The American Hockey League club continued its playoff surge with a dominant 5-1 victory over the Grand Rapids Griffins that began with a 10:35 a.m. puck drop at the downtown arena Tuesday. Playing before a raucous crowd of nearly 6,000 — predominantly school kids — the Moose improved to 27-29-1-1 overall and 9-1 in their last 10 games to maintain a grip on the final playoff spot in the Central Division. It’s hard to remember a time the future talent pool was as deep as it currently is. As such, the Free Press will be tracking the progress of these players during the season.

Here is our latest update:

The Michigan Wolverines have tumbled to No. 16 in the national rankings and face a challenging playoff path thanks to mediocre play in their own conference.

Peterson out to prove her team has what it takes to win Scotties

Taylor Allen 5 minute read Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024

MORDEN — It almost feels silly to suggest a team such as Beth Peterson’s is flying under the radar at this week’s Manitoba women’s curling provincials.

It was three years ago the Assiniboine product finished in fifth place at the Canadian Scotties after snagging the third and final wild-card spot.

When you’re not ranked Top 10 nationally, or don’t have a calendar filled with Grand Slam events, it can be easy to get overlooked in this province.

Peterson, who’s ranked 20th in the Canadian Team Ranking System and predominantly stuck to the Manitoba Curling Tour (MCT) this season, is the No. 4 seed in Morden this week behind Kaitlyn Lawes, Kate Cameron and Jolene Campbell.

Moose drop club record 10th straight game

Joshua Frey-Sam 4 minute read Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024

Not much has gone right for the Manitoba Moose lately.

Of course, tough stretches like this are expected of a young team finding its way at the pro level, but that doesn’t make it any easier to stomach.

The Moose lost a franchise-record 10th game in a row in a 2-1 defeat to the Chicago Wolves at the downtown rink on Tuesday. It was the eighth time the club has scored two goals or fewer over an 0-9-0-1 stretch that has yielded just one point to its standing at the bottom of the Central Division.

“I liked our effort but effort only goes so far, the execution has to be there,” said Moose head coach Mark Morrison. “I don’t think we can ever question of the group, right until the end they play hard, but execution wise we need to be better.”

Learning name of the game for Moose

Ken Wiebe 6 minute read Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023

The task for Mark Morrison is a familiar one, though the challenge can sometimes be a tad more difficult when the roster skews a bit younger.

The head coach of the Manitoba Moose is seeing progress through 20 games of the American Hockey League season, especially with his team having won four of the past five games — including an overtime triumph over the Calgary Wranglers on Sunday to improve to 10-10.

“We’re inconsistent, but we’re starting to try and find some consistency with the guys,” Morrison said after Thursday’s workout at the Hockey For All Centre. “Those are all just young mistakes, most of them. We have a really young group and just them getting used to the pro game, also trying to get them used to playing with some veteran players.”

Many of the mistakes that have been made are related to puck management, another issue that is standard practice for many in the minors, including the primary affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets.
