同 其他腦 電波 一 樣 ,Delta波 可 以用腦 電 圖 (EEG)嘅方法 探測 得 到 。本 嚟學界 對 Delta波 嘅定義 係 「頻 率 喺 1至 4Hz 之 間 嘅腦電波 」,但 係 近 期 啲嘅研究 就有興 將 個 界 限 設 喺「0.5至 2.0Hz 」嗰度。Delta波 係 古典 腦 電 研究所 描述嘅腦電波 當 中 最低 頻 嘅,要 去 到 廿 一世紀頭嘅腦電研究先有嘗試睇啲再低頻啲嘅腦電波-即 係 頻 率 低 到 成 0.1Hz 以下 嘅腦電波 [5]。- 喺一個正常健全嘅大人身上,Delta

波 有 性別 差異 :一般 嚟講,同 男 人 比 起 上 嚟,女人 嘅腦比較 多 Delta波 ,尤 其係喺 30零 到 40零 歲 嗰個年齡 組 別 [11]。事實 係 ,唔止人類 係 噉-喺多數 嘅哺乳類 動物 當 中 ,同 公 比 起 上 嚟,啲乸嘅腦係 多 啲 Delta波 。 印度 教 哲學 著作 當 中 嘅《不 二 論 》(梵文 :Advaita Vedānta;天城 文 :अद्वैत वेदान्त)有 主張 話 如果一個人可以喺瞓得最深但係又冇喺度發夢嗰陣有意識嘅話,噉佢就達到 咗一種極高層次嘅冥 想 狀態 ,呢種狀態 叫 「jagrat sushupti」。有 學者 相 信 呢種狀態 同 喺 Delta波 主導 嘅睡眠 當 中 嘅高大腦 皮 層 活動 有 關 [12]。

波 可 以由丘 腦 (thalamus)或 者 大腦 皮 層 嗰度產 生 。由 丘 腦 所產 生 嘅 Delta波 一般都俾學界認為係由同網狀 結構 (reticular formation)嘅協調 而生嘅[13][14];由 大腦 皮 層 所產 生 嘅 Delta波 會 由 視 交叉 上 核 調節 ,而視交叉 上 核 嘅病變 會 引致 Delta波 活動 異常 。 - Delta
波 活動 會 刺激 到 幾 種 荷 爾 蒙 嘅釋放 ,包括 咗會幫手釋放 生長 荷 爾 蒙 嘅 GHRH同 埋 催乳素 (prolactin)[15]。Delta波 係 通過 下 丘 腦 (hypothalamus)同 腦 垂 體 (pituitary)嚟做呢樣嘢嘅[15]。 除 咗噉,Delta波 有 側 化 嘅情況 -喺瞓覺 嗰陣嘅 Delta波 喺右腦 嗰度會 零 舍 強 [16]。- 喺 Delta
