Robert Smith, 1st Baron Carrington of Upton was born on 22 January 1752.2 He was the son of Abel Smith and Mary Bird.2 He was baptised on 21 February 1752 at St. Peter's Church, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, EnglandG.3 He married, firstly, Anne Boldero-Barnard, daughter of Lewyns Boldero-Barnard and Anne Popplewell, on 6 July 1780 at Tottenham, London, EnglandG.2,4 He married, secondly, Charlotte Hudson, daughter of John Hudson and Susanna Trevelyan, on 19 January 1836 at Bath, Somerset, EnglandG.2,4 He died on 18 September 1838 at age 86 at Whitehall, London, EnglandG.2,4 He was buried on 3 October 1838 at Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, EnglandG.4 His will was proven (by probate) on 2 November 1838, at under £120,000.4
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Nottingham between 1779 and 1797.2 He was created 1st Baron Carrington of Bulcot Lodge [Ireland] on 16 July 1796.2 He was created 1st Baron Carrington of Upton, co. Notts [Great Britain] on 20 October 1797.2 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)2 He held the office of President of the Board of Agriculture between 1800 and 1803.2 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 29 May 1800.4 He held the office of Captain of Deal Castle between 1802 and 1838.2,4 He was president of the London Institution between 1812 and 1827.4 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) on 16 April 1812.4 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, on 5 July 1819.4 His last will was dated 22 July 1836. He lived at Bulcot, Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire, EnglandG.3
