Walter Butler, 11th Earl of Ormonde was born in 1569.1 He was the son of Hon. John Butler and Katherine MacCartie.1 He married Hon. Helen Butler, daughter of Edmund Butler, 2nd Viscount Mountgarret and Grizel FitzPatrick.1 He died on 24 February 1632.1 He was buried at St. Canice Cathedral, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, IrelandG.2
In 1596 he helped suppress Tyrone's uprising.1 He was appointed Knight in January 1597/98.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Tipperary [Ireland] from 1613 to 1614.1 He succeeded as the 11th Earl of Ormonde [I., 1328] on 22 November 1614.1 He succeeded as the 4th Earl of Ossory [I., 1528] on 22 November 1614.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Thurles [I., 1536] on 22 November 1614.1 From 11 June 1619 to March 1624/25 he was imprisoned for declining to acquiesce in King James I's judgement that the lion's share of the family estates should go to the 10th Earl of Ormonde's daughter, Elizabeth, Lady Dingwall.1 He lived at Kilcash, County Kilkenny, IrelandG.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4

Edmund Butler, 2nd Viscount Mountgarret was the son of Richard Butler, 1st Viscount Mountgarret and Ellen Butler.1 He married Grizel FitzPatrick, daughter of Barnaby FitzPatrick, 1st Baron of Upper Ossory and Elizabeth O'Connor.1 He died on 24 November 1602.
He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount Mountgarret, co. Wexford [I., 1550] on 20 December 1571.1 He held the office of Sheriff of County Kilkenny in 1576.1
