Determination of $|V_{ub}|$ from simultaneous measurements of untagged $B^0\toπぱい^- \ell^+ νにゅー_{\ell}$ and $B^+\toρろー^0 \ell^+νにゅー_{\ell}$ decays

Abstract: We present a measurement of $|V_{ub}|$ from a simultaneous study of the charmless semileptonic decays $B^0\toπぱい^- \ell^+ νにゅー_{\ell}$ and $B^+\toρろー^0 \ell^+νにゅー_{\ell}$, where $\ell = e, μみゅー$. This measurement uses a data sample of 387 million $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs recorded by the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider between 2019 and 2022. The two decays are reconstructed with… ▽ More We present a measurement of $|V_{ub}|$ from a simultaneous study of the charmless semileptonic decays $B^0\toπぱい^- \ell^+ νにゅー_{\ell}$ and $B^+\toρろー^0 \ell^+νにゅー_{\ell}$, where $\ell = e, μみゅー$. This measurement uses a data sample of 387 million $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs recorded by the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider between 2019 and 2022. The two decays are reconstructed without identifying the partner $B$ mesons. We simultaneously measure the differential branching fractions of $B^0\toπぱい^- \ell^+ νにゅー_{\ell}$ and $B^+\toρろー^0 \ell^+νにゅー_{\ell}$ decays as functions of $q^2$ (momentum transfer squared). From these, we obtain total branching fractions $B(B^0\toπぱい^- \ell^+ νにゅー_{\ell}) = (1.516 \pm 0.042 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.059 (\mathrm{syst})) \times 10^{-4}$ and $B(B^+\toρろー^0 \ell^+νにゅー_{\ell}) = (1.625 \pm 0.079 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.180 (\mathrm{syst})) \times 10^{-4}$. By fitting the measured $B^0\toπぱい^- \ell^+ νにゅー_{\ell}$ partial branching fractions as functions of $q^2$, together with constraints on the non-perturbative hadronic contribution from lattice QCD calculations, we obtain $|V_{ub}|$ = $(3.93 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.19) \times 10^{-3}$. Vacuum polarization and Wichmann-Kroll correction in the finite basis set approximation

Abstract: The finite basis set method is commonly used to calculate atomic spectra, including QED contributions such as bound-electron self-energy. Still, it remains problematic and underexplored for vacuum-polarization calculations. We fill this gap by trying this approach in its application to the calculation of the vacuum-polarization charge density and the Wichmann-Kroll correction to the electron bindi… ▽ More The finite basis set method is commonly used to calculate atomic spectra, including QED contributions such as bound-electron self-energy. We study the convergence of the method with different types and sizes of basis sets. We cross-check our results for the Wichmann-Kroll correction by direct integration of the Green's function. The event yields are extracted… ▽ More We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight $\overline B{}^0\to D^{(*)+} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$, $B^{-}\to D^{(*)0} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the $Υうぷしろん(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $362~\text{fb}^{-1}$. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ meson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of $m(K^-K^{(*)0}_{(S)})$ and $m(D^{(*)}K^{(*)0}_{(S)})$ in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. These results include the first observation of $\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0$, $B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0$, and $\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of the other channels compared to previous measurements. The helicity-angle distributions and the invariant mass distributions of the $K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ systems are compatible with quasi-two-body decays via a resonant transition with spin-parity $J^P=1^-$ for the $K^-K_S^0$ systems and $J^P= 1^+$ for the $K^-K^{*0}$ systems. We also present measurements of the branching fractions of four $\overline B{}^0\to D^{(*)+} D_s^-$, $B^{-}\to D^{(*)0} D_s^- $ decay channels with a precision compatible to the current world averages. △ Less

Abstract: We report the result of a search for the rare decay $B^{0} \to γがんまγがんま$ using a combined dataset of $753\times10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and $387\times10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment from decays of the $\rm Υうぷしろん(4S)$ resonance produced in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions. We find no evidence for signal and set upper limits on branching fractions at the $90\%$ confidence level in the range $(3.8 - 47) \times 10^{-8}$ depending on the decay channel. We use an $e^+e^-$ data sample corresponding to 191 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected at a center-of-mass energy at or near the $Υうぷしろん{(4S)}$ resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. Signal yields are extracted by fitting the two-photon mass distribution in $e^+e^- \to πぱい^+πぱい^-πぱい^0γがんま$ events, which involve a $πぱい^0 \to γがんまγがんま$ decay and an energetic photon radiated from the initial state. Signal efficiency corrections with an accuracy of 1.6% are obtained from several control data samples. The uncertainty on the cross section at the $ωおめが$ and $φふぁい$ resonances is dominated by the systematic uncertainty of 2.2%. The resulting cross sections in the 0.62-1.80 GeV energy range yield $ a_μみゅー^{3πぱい} = [48.91 \pm 0.23~(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 1.07~(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-10} $ for the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. This result differs by $2.5$ standard deviations from the most precise current determination. △ Less

Abstract: The armed invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation has adversely affected the relations between Russia and Western countries. Among other aspects, it has put scientific cooperation and collaboration into question and changed the scientific landscape significantly. Cooperation between some Western institutions and their Russian and Belarusian partners were put on hold after February 24, 2022.… ▽ More The armed invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation has adversely affected the relations between Russia and Western countries. Cooperation between some Western institutions and their Russian and Belarusian partners were put on hold after February 24, 2022. The CERN Council decided at its meeting in December 2023 to terminate cooperation agreements with Russia and Belarus that date back a decade. CERN is an international institution with UN observer status, and has so far played a role in international cooperation which was independent of national political strategies. We argue that the Science4Peace idea still has a great value and scientific collaboration between scientists must continue, since fundamental science is by its nature an international discipline. A ban of scientists participating in international cooperation and collaboration is against the traditions, requirements and understanding of science. We call for measures to reactivate the peaceful cooperation of individual scientists on fundamental research in order to stimulate international cooperation for a more peaceful world in the future. Specifically, we plead for finding ways to continue this cooperation through international organizations, such as CERN and JINR. △ Less

The analysis probes two different models of $X$ beyond the standard model: a $Z^{\prime}$ vector boson in the… ▽ More We report on a search for a resonance $X$ decaying to a pair of muons in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow μみゅー^+ μみゅー^- X$ events in the 0.212-9.000 GeV/$c^{2}$ mass range, using 178 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the BelleII experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at a center of mass energy of 10.58 GeV. The analysis probes two different models of $X$ beyond the standard model: a $Z^{\prime}$ vector boson in the $L_μみゅー-L_τたう$ model and a muonphilic scalar. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at the 90$\%$ confidence level on the products of cross section and branching fraction for these processes, ranging from 0.046 fb to 0.97 fb for the $L_μみゅー-L_τたう$ model and from 0.055 fb to 1.3 fb for the muonphilic scalar model. For masses below 6 GeV/$c^{2}$, the corresponding constraints on the couplings of these processes to the standard model range from 0.0008 to 0.039 for the $L_μみゅー-L_τたう$ model and from 0.0018 to 0.040 for the muonphilic scalar model. The ratio of branching fractions is extracted in a simultaneous fit to two signal-discriminating variables in both channels and yields $R(D^{*}) = 0.262~_{-0.039}^{+0.041}(\mathrm{stat})~_{-0.032}^{+0.035}(\mathrm{syst})$. We use the inclusive properties of the accompanying $B$ meson in $Υうぷしろん(4S) \to B\kern 0.18em\overline{\kern -0.18em B}{}$ events to suppress background from other decays of the signal $B$ candidate and light-quark pair production. We validate the measurement with an auxiliary analysis based on a conventional hadronic reconstruction of the accompanying $B$ meson. For background suppression, we exploit distinct signal features using machine learning methods tuned with simulated data. The signal-reconstruction efficiency and background suppression are validated through various control channels. The branching fraction is extracted in a maximum likelihood fit. Our inclusive and hadronic analyses yield consistent results for the $B^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}νにゅー\barνにゅー$ branching fraction of $\left[2.7\pm 0.5(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.5(\mathrm{syst})\right] \times 10^{-5}$ and $\left[1.1^{+0.9}_{-0.8}(\mathrm{stat}){}^{+0.8}_{-0.5}(\mathrm{syst})\right] \times 10^{-5}$, respectively. Combining the results, we determine the branching fraction of the decay $B^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}νにゅー\barνにゅー$ to be $\left[2.3 \pm 0.5(\mathrm{stat})^{+0.5}_{-0.4}(\mathrm{syst})\right]\times 10^{-5}$, providing the first evidence for this decay at $3.5$ standard deviations. Beyond a Year of Sanctions in Science

Historically, fundamental research as conducted at international research centers such as CERN has long been seen as a driver for peace, and the Science4Peace idea has been celebrated for decades. Historically, fundamental research as conducted at international research centers such as CERN has long been seen as a driver for peace, and the Science4Peace idea has been celebrated for decades. However, much changed with the war against Ukraine, and most Western science organizations put scientific cooperation with Russia and Belarus on hold immediately after the start of the war in 2022. In addition, common publications and participation in conferences were banned by some institutions, going against the ideal of free scientific exchange and communication. These and other points were the topics of an international virtual panel discussion organized by the Science4Peace Forum together with the "Natural Scientists Initiative - Responsibility for Peace and Sustainability" (NatWiss e.V.) in Germany and the journal "Wissenschaft und Frieden" (W&F) (see the Figure). Fellows from the Hamburg Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH), scientists collaborating with the large physics research institutes DESY and CERN, as well as from climate and futures researchers were represented on the panel. In this Dossier we document the panel discussion, and give additional perspectives. The authors of the individual sections present their personal reflections, which should not be taken as implying that they are endorsed by the Science4Peace Forum or any other organizations. Excitation of the $^{229}$Th nucleus by the hole in the inner electronic shells

Abstract: The $^{229}$Th nucleus has a long-lived isomeric state $A^*$ at 8.338(24) eV [Kraemer et al, Nature, \textbf{617}, 706 (2023)]. This state is connected to the ground state by an M1 transition. For a hydrogenlike Th ion in the $1s$ state the hyperfine structure splitting is about 0.7 eV. This means that the hyperfine interaction can mix the nuclear ground state with the isomeric state with a mixing… ▽ More The $^{229}$Th nucleus has a long-lived isomeric state $A^*$ at 8.338(24) eV [Kraemer et al, Nature, \textbf{617}, 706 (2023)]. For the $2s$ state the effect is roughly two orders of magnitude smaller. An atom with a hole in the $1s$ or $2s$ shell is similar to the hydrogenlike atom, only the hole has a short lifetime $τたう$. After the hole is filled, there is a non-zero probability to find the nucleus in the $A^*$ state. Estimates of this probability are presented along with a discussion of possible experiments on Th-doped xenotime-type orthophosphate crystals and other broad band gap materials. △ Less

Precise measurement of the $D^+_s$ lifetime at Belle II

Electron correlation effects on the $g$ factor of lithiumlike ions

Abstract: We present the systematic QED treatment of the electron correlation effects on the $g$ factor of lithiumlike ions for the wide range of nuclear charge number $Z= 14$ -- $82$. The one- and two-photon exchange corrections are evaluated rigorously within the QED formalism. Finite-Basis-Set Approach to the Two-Center Heteronuclear \\ Dirac Problem

Abstract: A model-operator approach to fully relativistic calculations of the nuclear recoil effect on energy levels in many-electron atomic systems is worked out. The one-electron part of the model operator for treating the normal mass shift beyond the Breit approximation is represented by a sum of semilocal and nonlocal potentials. The capabilities of the method are probed by comparison of its predictions with the results of ab initio QED calculations. The result is based on $e^+e^-\toΥうぷしろん(4S)$ data recorded by the Belle II detector corresponding to 189.2/fb of integrated luminosity. The semileptonic decays $B^0\to D^-(\to K^+πぱい^-πぱい^-)\ell^+νにゅー_\ell$ and $B^+\to\bar D^0(\to K^+πぱい^-)\ell^+νにゅー_\ell$ are reconstructed, where $\ell$ is either electron or a muon. The second $B$ meson in the $Υうぷしろん(4S)$ event is not explicitly reconstructed. Using the diamond-frame method, we determine the $B$ meson four-momentum and thus the hadronic recoil. We extract the partial decay rates as functions of $w$ and perform a fit to the decay form-factor and the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using the BGL parameterization of the form factor and lattice QCD input from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations. We obtain $ηいーた_{EW}|V_{cb}|=(38.53\pm 1.15)\times 10^{-3}$, where $ηいーた_{EW}$ is an electroweak correction, and the error accounts for theoretical and experimental sources of uncertainty. △ Less

The total branching fraction is found to be $(1.426 \pm 0.056 \pm 0.125) \times 10^{-4}$ for $B^0\toπぱい^- \ell^+ νにゅー_{\ell}$ decays, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. By fitting the measured partial branching fractions as functions of $q^{2}$, together with constraints on the nonperturbative hadronic contribution from lattice QCD calculations, the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$, $(3.55 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-3}$, is extracted. The further inclusion of $q_T$-resummation corrections in the theoretical predictions leads to a better modelling of the lepton $p_T$ distribution and we study how this improve the description of the data. △ Less

We measure ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow πぱい^+ πぱい^0) = (6.12 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.53)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ πぱい^0) = (14.30 \pm 0.69 \pm 0.79)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{A}_{\it CP}(B^+ \rightarrow πぱい^+ πぱい^0) = -0.085 \pm 0.085 \pm 0.019}$, and ${\mathcal{A}_{\it CP}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ πぱい^0) = 0.014 \pm 0.047 \pm 0.010}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.
