Approximate equivalence relations
Abstract: We study approximate equivalence relations up to commensurability, in the presence of a definable measure. As a basic framework, we give a presentation of probability logic based on continuous logic. Hoover's normal form is valid here; if one begins with a discrete logic structure, it reduces arbitrary formulas of probability logic to correlations between quantifier-free formulas. Model Equivalences
Abstract: We look at equivalence relations on the set of models of a theory -- MERs, for short -- such that the class of equivalent pairs is itself an elementary class, in a language appropriate for pairs of models. Embedded Finite Models Beyond Restricted Quantifier Collapse
Abstract: We revisit evaluation of logical formulas that allow both uninterpreted relations, constrained to be finite, as well as an interpreted vocabulary over an infinite domain. On NIP and invariant measures
Abstract: We study forking, Lascar strong types, Keisler measures and definable groups, under an assumption of $NIP$ (not the independence property), continuing aspects of math.LO/0607442. Among key results are: (i) if $p = tp(b/A)$ does not fork over $A$ then the Lascar strong type of $b$ over $A$ coincides with the compact strong type of $b$ over $A$ and any global nonforking extension of $p$ is Borel d… ▽ More

Comments: Changes from the first version include removing the old section 8 on generic compact domination, giving a more complete account of the Vapnik-Chervonenkis theorem and its applications, the addition of an appendix on the existence of definable Skolem functions in suitable o-minimal structures, as well as expanding and clarifying various proofs

Definable equivalence relations and zeta functions of groups
Abstract: We prove that the theory of the $p$-adics ${\mathbb Q}_p$ admits elimination of imaginaries provided we add a sort for ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Q}_p)/{\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Z}_p)$ for each $n$. We also prove that the elimination of imaginaries is uniform in $p$. Using $p$-adic and motivic integration, we deduce the uniform rationality of certain formal zeta functions arising from definable equivalence re… ▽ More

The value ring of geometric motivic integration and the Iwahori Hecke algebra of SL_2
Abstract: In \cite{HK}, an integration theory for valued fields was developed with a Grothendieck group approach. It was shown that the semiring of semi-algebraic sets with measure preserving morphisms is isomorphic to a certain semiring formed out of twisted varieties over the residue field and rational polytopes over the value group. With a view to representation-theoretic applications, we require a simpl… ▽ More

Groups, measures, and the NIP
Abstract: We discuss measures, invariant measures on definable groups, and genericity, often in an NIP (failure of the independence property) environment. We complete the proof of the third author's conjectures relating definably compact groups $G$ in saturated $o$-minimal structures to compact Lie groups. We also prove some other structural results about such $G$, for example the existence of a left inva… ▽ More

Groupoids, imaginaries and internal covers
Abstract: Let $T$ be a first-order theory. A correspondence is established between internal covers of models of $T$ and definable groupoids within $T$. We also consider amalgamations of independent diagrams of algebraically closed substructures, and find strong relation between: covers, uniqueness for 3-amalgamation, existence of 4-amalgamation, imaginaries of $T^\si$, and definable groupoids. As a corollar… ▽ More

Stable domination and independence in algebraically closed valued fields
Abstract: We seek to create tools for a model-theoretic analysis of types in algebraically closed valued fields (ACVF). We give evidence to show that a notion of 'domination by stable part' plays a key role. In Part A, we develop a general theory of stably dominated types, showing they enjoy an excellent independence theory, as well as a theory of definable types and germs of definable functions. In Part… ▽ More

Integration in valued fields
Abstract: We develop a theory of integration over valued fields of residue characteristic zero. In particular we obtain new and base-field independent foundations for integration over local fields of large residue characteristic, extending results of Denef,Loeser, Cluckers. The method depends on an analysis of definable sets up to definable bijections. We obtain a precise description of the Grothendieck s… ▽ More

A question of van den Dries and a theorem of Lipshitz and Robinson: Not everything is standard
Abstract: We use a new construction of an o-minimal structure, due to Lipshitz and Robinson, to answer a question of van den Dries regarding the relationship between arbitrary o-minimal expansions of real closed fields and structures over the real numbers. We write a first order sentence which is true in the Lipshitz-Robinson structure but fails in any possible interpretation over the field of real number… ▽ More
