We have investigated the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal heavy-fermion compound CeAuAl3 using muon spin rotation (muSR), neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. We have also revisited the magnetic, transport and thermal properties. The magnetic susceptibility reveals an antiferromagnetic transition at 1.1 K with a possibility of another magnetic transition near 0.18 K. The heat capacity shows a sharp lambda-type anomaly at 1.1 K in zero-filed, which broadens and moves to higher temperature in applied magnetic field. Our zero-field muSR and ND measurements confirm the existence of a long-range magnetic ground state below 1.2 K. Further the ND study reveals an incommensurate magnetic ordering with a magnetic propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0.52) and a spiral structure of Ce moments coupled ferromagnetically within the ab-plane. Our INS study reveals the presence of two well-defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations at 5.1 meV and 24.6 meV in the paramagnetic phase of CeAuAl3 which can be explained on the basis of the CEF theory. Furthermore, low energy quasi-elastic excitations show a Gaussian line shape below 30 K compared to a Lorentzian line shape above 30 K, indicating a slowdown of spin fluctuation below 30 K. We have estimated a Kondo temperature of TK=3.5 K from the quasi-elastic linewidth, which is in good agreement with that estimated from the heat capacity. This study also indicates the absence of any CEF-phonon coupling unlike that observed in isostructural CeCuAl3. The CEF parameters, energy level scheme and their wave functions obtained from the analysis of INS data explain satisfactorily the single crystal susceptibility in the presence of two-ion anisotropic exchange interaction in CeAuAl3.

The magnetic excitation spectrum of the unconventional ferromagnet CeRh$_{3}$B$_{2}$ was measured by inelastic neutron scattering on single crystal sample in the magnetically ordered and paramagnetic phases. The spin-wave excitation spectrum evidences high exchange interaction along the c-axis about two orders of magnitude higher than the ones in the basal plane of the hexagonal structure. Both strong out of plane and small in plane anisotropies are found. This latter point confirms that considering the $J$=5/2 multiplet alone is not adequate for describing the ground state of CeRh$_{3}$B$_{2}$. Quasielastic scattering measured above $T_{Curie}$ is also strongly anisotropic between the basal plane and the c-axis and suggests localized magnetism.

The J1-J2 model on a square lattice exhibits a rich variety of different forms of magnetic order that depend sensitively on the ratio of exchange constants J2/J1. We use bulk magnetometry and polarized neutron scattering to determine J1 and J2 unambiguously for two materials in a new family of vanadium phosphates, Pb2VO(PO4)2 and SrZnVO(PO4)2, and we find that they have ferromagnetic J1. The ordered moment in the collinear antiferromagnetic ground state is reduced, and the diffuse magnetic scattering is enhanced, as the predicted bond-nematic region of the phase diagram is approached.

TmGa$_{3}$ (AuCu$_3$ structure) undergoes two phase transitions, an antiferroquadrupolar transition at $\sim$ 4.29 K and long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at $\sim$ 4.26 K. Due to the close vicinity of the two phase transitions, TmGa$_3$ offers an interesting system to study the interplay of charge and magnetic degrees of freedom. In order to understand this interplay we have performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments on TmGa$_{3}$ in the paramagnetic regime ($T >$ 5 K) to redetermine the crystal electric field level scheme. By fitting our spectra at various temperatures we obtain a new crystal field level scheme with Lea, Leask and Wolf parameters of $x_{\rm LLW}$ = -0.44(2) and $W$ = -0.222(2) K. The total crystal field splitting at 5K amounts to $\sim$ 2.3 meV, about an order of magnitude less than found previously, but in good agreement with the splitting extrapolated from the related ErGa$_3$ system.
Our analysis yields a $Γ_{2}$ singlet as the crystal field ground state followed closely by a (nonmagnetic) $Γ_{1}$ singlet at 0.009 meV. The next excited states are a $Γ_{5}^{(2)}$ triplet at $\sim$0.5 meV, which is almost degenerate to a $Γ_{4}$ doublet. This level scheme is adverse to previous findings. Subsequent analysis of the magnetisation along several crystallographic directions and the temperature dependant susceptibility as well as of the magnetic contribution to the specific heat are consistent with our new crystal field parameters. Implications for the antiferroquadrupolar and the antiferromagnetic transition are discussed.

These compounds represent samples in a magnetically ordered phase, at a quantum critical point and in the heavy-fermion phase, respectively. We show that at high temperatures the three compositions have the identical response of a local moment system. However, at low temperatures the spin fluctuations in the critical composition are given by non-Fermi-liquid dynamics, while the spin fluctuations in the heavy fermion system show a simple exponential decay in time. In both compositions, the lifetime of the fluctuations is determined solely by the distance to the quantum critical point. We discuss the implications of these observations regarding the possible origins of non-Fermi-liquid behavior in this system.

Below T*, an energy gap opens in the single-ion magnetic response in agreement with the predictions of the Anisotropic Kondo Model. Scaling arguments suggest that similar behavior may underlie the "hidden order" in URu2Si2.
