Measurement of Electron Antineutrino Oscillation Amplitude and Frequency via Neutron Capture on Hydrogen at Daya Bay

Abstract: This Letter reports the first measurement of the oscillation amplitude and frequency of reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay via neutron capture on hydrogen using 1958 days of data. With over 3.6 million signal candidates, an optimized candidate selection, improved treatment of backgrounds and efficiencies, refined energy calibration, and an energy response model for the capture-on-hydrogen sensitive… ▽ More This Letter reports the first measurement of the oscillation amplitude and frequency of reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay via neutron capture on hydrogen using 1958 days of data. With over 3.6 million signal candidates, an optimized candidate selection, improved treatment of backgrounds and efficiencies, refined energy calibration, and an energy response model for the capture-on-hydrogen sensitive region, the relative $\overlineνにゅー_{e}$ rates and energy spectra variation among the near and far detectors gives $\mathrm{sin}^22θしーた_{13} = 0.0759_{-0.0049}^{+0.0050}$ and $Δでるたm^2_{32} = (2.72^{+0.14}_{-0.15})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ assuming the normal neutrino mass ordering, and $Δでるたm^2_{32} = (-2.83^{+0.15}_{-0.14})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ for the inverted neutrino mass ordering. This estimate of $\sin^2 2θしーた_{13}$ is consistent with and essentially independent from the one obtained using the capture-on-gadolinium sample at Daya Bay. The combination of these two results yields $\mathrm{sin}^22θしーた_{13}= 0.0833\pm0.0022$, which represents an 8% relative improvement in precision regarding the Daya Bay full 3158-day capture-on-gadolinium result. △ Less

Search for a sub-eV sterile neutrino using Daya Bay's full dataset

Abstract: This Letter presents results of a search for the mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with three active neutrinos based on the full data sample of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, collected during 3158 days of detector operation, which contains $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ reactor \anue candidates identified as inverse beta-decay interactions followed by neutron-capture on gadolinium. The analysis… ▽ More This Letter presents results of a search for the mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with three active neutrinos based on the full data sample of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, collected during 3158 days of detector operation, which contains $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ reactor \anue candidates identified as inverse beta-decay interactions followed by neutron-capture on gadolinium. The analysis benefits from a doubling of the statistics of our previous result and from improvements of several important systematic uncertainties. No significant oscillation due to mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with active neutrinos was found. Exclusion limits are set by both Feldman-Cousins and CLs methods. Light sterile neutrino mixing with $\sin^2 2θしーた_{14} \gtrsim 0.01$ can be excluded at 95\% confidence level in the region of $0.01$ eV$^2 \lesssim |Δでるたm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1 $ eV$^2$. This result represents the world-leading constraints in the region of $2 \times 10^{-4}$ eV$^2 \lesssim |Δでるたm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.2 $ eV$^2$. △ Less

First measurement of the yield of $^8$He isotopes produced in liquid scintillator by cosmic-ray muons at Daya Bay

Abstract: Daya Bay presents the first measurement of cosmogenic $^8$He isotope production in liquid scintillator, using an innovative method for identifying cascade decays of $^8$He and its child isotope, $^8$Li. We also measure the production yield of $^9$Li isotopes using well-established methodology. The results, in units of 10$^{-8}μみゅー^{-1}$g$^{-1}$cm$^{2}$, are 0.307$\pm$0.042, 0.341$\pm$0.040, and 0.546… ▽ More Daya Bay presents the first measurement of cosmogenic $^8$He isotope production in liquid scintillator, using an innovative method for identifying cascade decays of $^8$He and its child isotope, $^8$Li. The measured production rate of $^8$He isotopes is more than an order of magnitude lower than any other measurement of cosmogenic isotope production. It replaces the results of previous attempts to determine the ratio of $^8$He to $^9$Li production that yielded a wide range of limits from 0 to 30\%. For the quantum mechanics-based approach (QM-NSI), the constraints on the CC-NSI parameters $εいぷしろん_{eαあるふぁ}$ and $εいぷしろん_{eαあるふぁ}^{s}$ are extracted with and without the assumption that the effects of the new physics are the same in the production and detection processes, respectively. The approach based on the weak effective field theory (WEFT-NSI) deals with four types of CC-NSI represented by the parameters $[\varepsilon_{X}]_{eαあるふぁ}$. For both approaches, the results for the CC-NSI parameters are shown for cases with various fixed values of the CC-NSI and the Dirac CP-violating phases, and when they are allowed to vary freely. We find that constraints on the QM-NSI parameters $εいぷしろん_{eαあるふぁ}$ and $εいぷしろん_{eαあるふぁ}^{s}$ from the Daya Bay experiment alone can reach the order $\mathcal{O}(0.01)$ for the former and $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ for the latter, while for WEFT-NSI parameters $[\varepsilon_{X}]_{eαあるふぁ}$, we obtain $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ for both cases. △ Less

Abstract: A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of $^{235}$U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the $^{235}$U spectral shape to about 3\%. The ${}^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. Antineutrino Energy Spectrum Unfolding Based on the Daya Bay Measurement and Its Applications

The positron energy spectrum of 3.5 million antineutrino inverse beta decay reactions observed by the Daya Bay experiment, in combination with the fission rates of fissile isotopes in the reactor, is used to extract the positron energy spectra resulting from the fission of specif… ▽ More The prediction of reactor antineutrino spectra will play a crucial role as reactor experiments enter the precision era. The positron energy spectrum of 3.5 million antineutrino inverse beta decay reactions observed by the Daya Bay experiment, in combination with the fission rates of fissile isotopes in the reactor, is used to extract the positron energy spectra resulting from the fission of specific isotopes. This information can be used to produce a precise, data-based prediction of the antineutrino energy spectrum in other reactor antineutrino experiments with different fission fractions than Daya Bay. The positron energy spectra are unfolded to obtain the antineutrino energy spectra by removing the contribution from detector response with the Wiener-SVD unfolding method. Consistent results are obtained with other unfolding methods. A technique to construct a data-based prediction of the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum is proposed and investigated. Given the reactor fission fractions, the technique can predict the energy spectrum to a 2% precision. In addition, we illustrate how to perform a rigorous comparison between the unfolded antineutrino spectrum and a theoretical model prediction that avoids the input model bias of the unfolding method. △ Less

Abstract: We report a measurement of the observed cross sections of the inclusive $J/ψぷさい$ production in $e^+e^-\rightarrow {J}/ψぷさい{\rm X}$ based on 3.21 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated at energies from 3.645 to 3.891 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider. The energy-dependent lineshape obtained from the measured cross sections cannot be well described by two Breit-Wigner (BW) amplitudes of… ▽ More We report a measurement of the observed cross sections of the inclusive $J/ψぷさい$ production in $e^+e^-\rightarrow {J}/ψぷさい{\rm X}$ based on 3.21 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated at energies from 3.645 to 3.891 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider. Instead it can be better described with three BW amplitudes of the decays $ψぷさい(3686)\rightarrow {J}/ψぷさい{\rm X}$, $R(3760)\rightarrow {J}/ψぷさい{\rm X}$ and $R(3790)\rightarrow {J}/ψぷさい{\rm X}$ with two distinct structures referred to as $R(3760)$ and $R(3790)$. Under this assumption, we extracted their masses, total widths, and the product of the leptonic width and decay branching fractions to be $M_{R(3760)}= {3761.7\pm 2.2 \pm 1.2}$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γがんま^{\rm tot}_{R(3760)}= {6.7\pm 11.1 \pm 1.1}$ MeV, $Γがんま^{ee}_{R(3760)}\mathcal B[R(3760)\rightarrow {J}/ψぷさい{\rm X}]=(4.0\pm 4.3\pm 1.2)$ eV, $M_{R(3790)} = {3784.7\pm 5.7 \pm 1.6}$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γがんま^{\rm tot}_{R(3790)} = {31.6 \pm 11.9 \pm 3.2}$ MeV, $Γがんま^{ee}_{R(3790)}\mathcal B[R(3790)\rightarrow {J}/ψぷさい{\rm X}]=(18.1\pm 10.3\pm 4.7)$ eV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and second systematic. △ Less

Optimization of the JUNO liquid scintillator composition using a Daya Bay antineutrino detector

The optical properties of the new LS in various compositions were studied by replacing the gadolinium-loaded LS in one antineutrino detector. The concentrations of the fluor, PPO, and the wavelength shifter, bis-MSB, were increased in 12 steps from 0.5 g/L and <0.01 mg/L to 4 g/L and 13 mg/L, respectively. The numbers of total detected photoelectrons suggest that, with the optically purified solvent, the bis-MSB concentration does not need to be more than 4 mg/L. To bridge the one order of magnitude in the detector size difference between Daya Bay and JUNO, the Daya Bay data were used to tune the parameters of a newly developed optical model. Then, the model and tuned parameters were used in the JUNO simulation. This enabled to determine the optimal composition for the JUNO LS: purified solvent LAB with 2.5 g/L PPO, and 1 to 4 mg/L bis-MSB. △ Less

We used three time windows of $\mathrm{\pm 10~s}$, $\mathrm{\pm 500~s}$, and $\mathrm{\pm 1000~s}$ relative to the occurrence of the GW events, and a neutrino energy range of 1.8 to 100 MeV to search for correlated neutrino candidates. The detected electron-antineutrino candidates are consistent with the expected background rates for all the three time windows. Assuming monochromatic spectra, we found upper limits (90% confidence level) on electron-antineutrino fluence of $(1.13~-~2.44) \times 10^{11}~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ at 5 MeV to $8.0 \times 10^{7}~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ at 100 MeV for the three time windows. Under the assumption of a Fermi-Dirac spectrum, the upper limits were found to be $(5.4~-~7.0)\times 10^{9}~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ for the three time windows. △ Less

The branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+ηいーた^{\prime})=(2.68\pm0.17\pm0.17\pm0.08)\times10^{-3}$,… ▽ More We measure the branching fractions for seven $D_{s}^{+}$ two-body decays to pseudo-scalar mesons, by analyzing data collected at $\sqrt{s}=4.178\sim4.226$ GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+ηいーた^{\prime})=(2.68\pm0.17\pm0.17\pm0.08)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toηいーた^{\prime}πぱい^+)=(37.8\pm0.4\pm2.1\pm1.2)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+ηいーた)=(1.62\pm0.10\pm0.03\pm0.05)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toηいーたπぱい^+)=(17.41\pm0.18\pm0.27\pm0.54)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+K_S^0)=(15.02\pm0.10\pm0.27\pm0.47)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K_S^0πぱい^+)=(1.109\pm0.034\pm0.023\pm0.035)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+πぱい^0)=(0.748\pm0.049\pm0.018\pm0.023)\times10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, and the third are from external input branching fraction of the normalization mode $D_s^+\to K^+K^-πぱい^+$. The average decay asymmetry, $(αあるふぁ_{0} - \barαあるふぁ_{0})/2$, is calculated to be $-0.994\pm0.004\pm0.002$. Abstract: The cross sections of the process $e^{+}e^{-} \to ηいーたJ/ψぷさい$ at center-of-mass energies ($\sqrt{s}$) between 3.81 and 4.60 GeV are measured with high precision by using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Three structures are observed by analyzing the lineshape of the measured cross sections, and a maximum-likelihood fit including three resonances is performed by assuming the lowest lying structure is the $ψぷさい(4040)$. For the other resonances, we obtain masses of $(4218.7 \pm 4.0 \pm 2.5)$ and $(4380.4 \pm 14.2 \pm 1.8)$ MeV/c$^{2}$ with corresponding widths of $(82.5 \pm 5.9 \pm 0.5)$ and $(147.0 \pm 63.0 \pm 25.8)$ MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The measured resonant parameters are consistent with those of the $Y(4220)$ and $Y(4360)$ from pr evious measurements of different final states. Abstract: Using a sample of $1.31\times10^{9} ~J/ψぷさい$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform a study of $J/ψぷさい\toγがんまK\bar{K}ηいーた'$. The $X(2370)$ is observed in the $K\bar{K}ηいーた'$ invariant-mass distribution with a statistical significance of 8.3$σしぐま$. Its resonance parameters are measured to be $M = 2341.6 \pm 6.5\text{(stat.)} \pm 5.7\text{(syst.)}$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and… ▽ More Using a sample of $1.31\times10^{9} ~J/ψぷさい$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform a study of $J/ψぷさい\toγがんまK\bar{K}ηいーた'$. The $X(2370)$ is observed in the $K\bar{K}ηいーた'$ invariant-mass distribution with a statistical significance of 8.3$σしぐま$. Its resonance parameters are measured to be $M = 2341.6 \pm 6.5\text{(stat.)} \pm 5.7\text{(syst.)}$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and $Γがんま= 117 \pm 10 \text{(stat.)} \pm 8 \text{(syst.)}$~MeV. The product branching fractions for $J/ψぷさい\to γがんまX(2370), X(2370) \to K^{+} K^{-}ηいーた'$ and $J/ψぷさい\to γがんまX(2370), X(2370) \to K_{S}^{0} K_{S}^{0}ηいーた'$ are determined to be $(1.79 \pm 0.23 \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.65 \text{(syst.)}) \times 10^{-5}$ and $(1.18 \pm 0.32\ text{(stat.)} \pm 0.39 \text{(syst.)}) \times 10^{-5}$, respectively. No evident signal for the $X(2120)$ is observed in the $K\bar{K}ηいーた'$ invariant-mass distribution. The upper limits for the product branching fractions of $\mathcal{B}(J/ψぷさい\to γがんまX(2120)\toγがんまK^{+} K^{-} ηいーた')$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψぷさい\toγがんまX(2120)\toγがんまK_{S}^{0} K_{S}^{0} ηいーた')$ are determined to be $1.49\times10^{-5}$ and $6.38\times10^{-6}$ at the 90% confidence level, respectively. △ Less

Abstract: The cross section of the process $e^+e^-\toπぱい^+πぱい^-πぱい^0$ is measured with a precision of 1.6% to 25% in the energy range between $0.7$ and 3.0 GeV using the Initial State Radiation method. Abstract: Using a sample of $(448.1\pm2.9)\times10^6$ $ψぷさい(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform the first partial wave analysis of $ψぷさい(3686)\rightarrow K^+K^-ηいーた$. In addition to the well established states, $φふぁい(1020)$, $φふぁい(1680)$, and $K_3^*(1780)$, contributions from $X(1750)$, $ρろー(2150)$, $ρろー_3(2250)$, and $K^*_2(1980)$ are also observed. Abstract: There has recently been a dramatic renewal of interest in the subjects of hadron spectroscopy and charm physics. This renaissance has been driven in part by the discovery of a plethora of charmonium-like $XYZ$ states at BESIII and $B$ factories, and the observation of an intriguing proton-antiproton threshold enhancement and the possibly related $X(1835)$ meson state at BESIII, as well as the thre… ▽ More There has recently been a dramatic renewal of interest in the subjects of hadron spectroscopy and charm physics. This renaissance has been driven in part by the discovery of a plethora of charmonium-like $XYZ$ states at BESIII and $B$ factories, and the observation of an intriguing proton-antiproton threshold enhancement and the possibly related $X(1835)$ meson state at BESIII, as well as the threshold measurements of charm mesons and charm baryons. We present a detailed survey of the important topics in tau-charm physics and hadron physics that can be further explored at BESIII over the remaining lifetime of BEPCII operation. This survey will help in the optimization of the data-taking plan over the coming years, and provides physics motivation for the possible upgrade of BEPCII to higher luminosity. △ Less

Abstract: The SU(3)-flavor violating decay $J/ψぷさい\toΞくしー(1530)^{-}\barΞくしー^{+}+c.c.$ is studied using $(1310.6\pm7.0)\times 10^{6} ~J/ψぷさい$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII and the branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal{B}}(J/ψぷさい\toΞくしー(1530)^{-}\barΞくしー^{+}+c.c.)=(3.17\pm0.02_{\rm stat.}\pm0.08_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-4}$. The mass and width of the $D_{1}(2420)^+$ are measured to be $(2427.2\pm 1.0_{\rm stat.}\pm 1.2_{\rm syst.}) \rm{MeV}/c^2$ and $(23.2\pm 2.3_{\rm stat.} \pm2.3_{\rm syst.}) \rm{MeV}$, respectively. The first errors are statistical and the second ones are systematic. Abstract: Using E1 radiative transitions $ψぷさい(3686) \to γがんまχかい_{cJ}$ from a sample of $(448.1 \pm 2.9)\times10^{6}$ $ψぷさい(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays $χかい_{cJ}\to Σしぐま^{+}\bar{p}K_{S}^{0}+c.c.~(J = 0, 1, 2)$ are studied. Observation of the leptonic decay $D^+ \to τたう^+ νにゅー_τたう$

Abstract: We report the first observation of $D^+\toτたう^+νにゅー_τたう$ with a significance of $5.1σしぐま$. We measure ${\cal B}(D^+\toτたう^+νにゅー_τたう) = (1.20\pm0.24_{\text{stat.}}\pm0.12_{\text{syst.}})\times10^{-3}$. Taking the world average ${\cal B}(D^+\toμみゅー^+νにゅー_μみゅー) = (3.74\pm0.17)\times10^{-4}$, we obtain $R_{τたう/μみゅー} =Γがんま(D^+\toτたう^+νにゅー_τたう)/Γがんま(D^+\toμみゅー^+νにゅー_μみゅー) = 3.21\pm0.64_{\text{stat.}}\pm0.43_{\text{syst.}}$, which is consistent with the St… ▽ More We report the first observation of $D^+\toτたう^+νにゅー_τたう$ with a significance of $5.1σしぐま$. No significant $ηいーた'$ signal is observed in the invariant mass spectrum of 4$πぱい^{0}$. The angular distribution parameter for $ψぷさい(3686)\rightarrowΞくしー(1530)^{-}\barΞくしー(1530)^{+}$ is determined to be $αあるふぁ$ = 0.40 $\pm$ 0.24 $\pm$ 0.06, which agrees with the theoretical predictions within 1$σしぐま$.
