Kathie Tovo was a member of the Austin City Council in Texas, representing District 9. Tovo assumed office on January 6, 2015. Tovo left office on January 6, 2023.

Tovo ran for re-election to the Austin City Council to represent District 9 in Texas. Tovo won in the general election on November 6, 2018.

The council elected her as the Mayor Pro Tempore in a 10-1 vote.[1][2]

Tovo is one of ten Austin City Council members who were elected to office in the city's first district-based election in 2014. Because city council members in Austin serve staggered four-year terms, the new members were sorted into two groups by lot. The members sorted into the first group were designated to serve four-year terms, and the members sorted into the second group were designated to serve two-year terms and run for re-election in 2016. The winners of the 2016 election would then serve full four-year terms.[3] Tovo was sorted into the first group to serve a full four-year term.[1]

Tovo previously served on the Austin City Council as an at-large member from 2011 to 2015.

The city of Austin held elections for city council on November 4, 2014. The candidate filing deadline was August 18, 2014. Because of redistricting and term limits, there was no incumbent for District 9.[6] The candidates were Erin K. McGann, Chris Riley and Kathryne Beth Tovo.[7] Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the general election, the top two vote-getters - Tovo and Riley - were scheduled to meet in a runoff election on December 16, 2014. On November 7, 2014, however, Riley withdrew from the race, leaving Tovo unchallenged for the District 9 seat.[8][9]
