Of the two, I do prefer 1592 because of the larger castle structure and Tudor-style building ... but having said that, this is another one of those sets that's so beautiful it's almost painful. I really adore that white building with the red roof, that's so pretty.

I can imagine that, for its time, this set was a marvel and the object of much coveting by youngsters anywhere, yet so few own it. There is something about the inclusion of baseplates, landscaping and other treatments that creates a sense of place, community, and interconnectedness, which gets lost in the individual masterpiece models of modular buildings. Perhaps LEGO would consider a set of streetscape accessory packs to link modulars and build a real community.

This RSotD debuted during my Dark Ages, so I never noticed it. If I owned it, it would be treasured. And it had alternate builds!

Wow, 1978 LEGO was ahead of its time. Self-driving cars!

With all the hair styles now, why don’t we have that hair piece anymore?

I have this set. Built and on display.

Still remember playing with it as a kid...

I see nothing wrong with this set. There's a lot of play value in there.

Oh, my heart melts for this set... I love it. Simply charming, it's like Lego was just realizing what they could do now that they had an "action figure". This appears to be a promotional set, anyone know how rare it was even in 1978?

Two baseplates - in one set! How lovely, simple yet plenty of play value.
I would gladly exchange some of the buildings / vehicles in today's big City sets for some baseplates.

I saved up the tokens from Weetabix packets when I was a kid, and remember sending off for it.
"Takes up to 3 weeks for delivery" seemed like about 100 years at the time! And, I managed not to throw away the instructions - I still have them!
From this one my Lego town grew.........

May I ask why, for sets such as this, the Brickset database usually catalogues the minifigures with plain torsos, not with the stickers applied? Just curious, is all ^^

Also, am I right in thinking this set seems to be based on the UK? Between the familiar speed limit signs, and the car in the picture driving on the left side of the road...

So am I correct in that this was a promotional set avail. to those in the UK region only, after purchasing so many boxes of Weetabix (which sounds as fun and tasty as chomping plain old wheat fresh from the field btw lol) and sending in your proofs-of-purchase?

This is one of those classic and timeless sets that could be released in any year and still stand out. One of these days Bricklink, this set will be mine (well, pieces for main builds anyway)!

@MCLegoboy, I'm thinking the man w/blue hat and red shirt who is holding the broom is actually controlling the car. You see back then the antenna for remote control vehicles was so long they had to be hidden in umbrellas, lamps, and yes even brooms! Tricky to control though, nudge the bristles too much on either side and the darn things would wind up right in a ditch, or the neighbors flowers. Man, how Mrs. MaGrizzly hated that!
