Wow. Ending 2020 with the big stuff?
And only a few days until these themes are RSOTD-Eligible:
Cars (other than that one on day 2 of this)
Ninjago
PotC
Alien Conquest
And Pharoh's Quest to name some.
This is a really fantastic model- it was the epitome of Big LEGO Set to me when I was a kid
Haven’t built it yet but loved this set when I first saw it and I always imagined after I build the Tower Bridge it will be repurposed and maybe the front facade of an impressive MOC building like a Cathedral.

Indeed it is!
how old am I!?
Pure delight.
Got it recently to make MOC Modulars, and meh. Too many tiny tan pieces, so not a lot of variety in what you can do overall. Might actually resell, and this thought had never occurred to m e for any other set!

I can't believe that, this time next week? Ninjago will be 10 years old.
I mean, damn guys. Damn.
Beautiful set with majestic in size. I wish I had it, but cannot imagine where to keep it. It's just too big for a regular family home.
I bought this set close to launch day to support a new LEGO Store in the area. I've had it for 10 years sitting in my basement waiting to be built! Doesn't look like I'll ever build it. This set may have to find a new home if it is ever going to be built!

Have had it for 2-3 years but never built it... just no idea where to put it when finished
This was one of the first sets I bought when I got back into Lego at the end of 2012. It's been on display ever since, and probably always will be. It's a great set.

"Call me crazy... but i could swear those cars use the same building techniques that we saw in the City Advent Calender this year."
Exactly what I thought when I saw those vehicles. I almost got the calendar for those to put on it as well.
Nice. This was on shelves for a while, wasn’t it? I think it was still available in 2017.

InyongBricks has made a great building out of this set. I bought this parts pack just to build that version (the original seemed a terribly boring build).

I was going to say the same: the museum is an awesome alternative build. I actually bought one last week and haven't taken it apart yet because the Tower Bridge does look marvellous on display.

The set page says it was sold in the UK and US until September 2019! That’s almost VW van levels of longevity!
One of the best value Lego sets ever.
Got it and still love it, its been packed away for quit a while as it takes up a lot of space, this makes me want to get it out and rebuild it.
..... and I can’t believe its 10yrs old!
I remember seeing this in local Lego shop and thinking wow this is impressive. The designers looked like they had a fun time designing and building this, as fairly tricky to get the steal suspension beams to look realistic. I always wondered over the last 10 years if someone would do a working model with lifting roadway, and Tom Goldsmith has a great story on how he did this https://medium.com/ @legotowerbridge /automating-a-lego-tower-bridge-model-e9322db31f88
Is this the first time we got a large D2C set on Random Set of the Day?

This is the one I bought it for actually. I built the first floor, and meh, not into it at all. The pictures give it a nice look, but then you realize that there's a lot of studded surfaces left, and that the inside is quite boring as well, because everything is tan. It was a great effort, but unfortunately the main build just didn't have enough colors to make a full-fledged modular.

Me to...
Bought it ten years ago, packed it up and moved house, and still haven’t got round to building it yet!
It was this set that first made me think, 'Wow, that looks a bit different to the last Lego set I'd bought 45 years earlier (621-2 Shell Tanker)'. The last 5 years have been spent catching up!
I built it with our then six year old and it was a great experience. It is currently in storage in semi-assembled condition as we have no place to display it in its full glory.
This has got to be the widest LEGO set ever at 128 studs. I mean, it's the equivalent of four (!) Modulars next to one another.
Plus, back in the day the set was often available for around 150 Euro, which made it awesome value. I got a second one back then just as a giant parts pack.
This is the biggest set I've ever built. Also one of those that I opened the soonest after purchase. I needed those bricks for my Ministry of the Brick :)
But it was so good looking I kept it on display for a couple of days before cannibalizing parts for a MOC.
Also I remember how disappointed I was when I realised all of the bow bricks at the bottom of towers are of bad kind with flat antistud at the end.
I've walked part way along the real bridge that this is based on, if that counts for anything...
I remember seeing this set in Lego catalogues just as I was entering my 'dark age'; but big detailed models just weren't my cup of tea at the time; and even though it looks fantastic, I still couldn't truthfully see myself ever owning this... even if I had the money and HAD to spend it on Lego, there are several other sets I'd prioritise over this.
Still impressive, though! Just not my thing, personally ^^
Love it, but like most of you, mines still sitting in its box waiting to be built, along with a few others. It’s just finding the room. Did tell the wife we need a new house as one bedroom for lego and other toys is not enough... she said NO!!
Still waiting for another large bridge set like Ponte Vecchio (Florence), Stari Most (Mostar) or Brooklyn Bridge (NYC)...
One of the first sets i bought when coming out of my dark ages. It’s been on display ever since. Absolutely love it.
This is one of those sets that I can look at, recognize that it’s really well designed, and have zero interest in owning. The Routemaster is the only part I’m tempted by, and I can probably build that from my collection.
@AustinPowers:
Diagon Alley is four baseplates wide.
Like with many others I have no idea where to place this. It is the number one reason why I never bought this.
Wow Huwbot, your tastes suddenly got expensive (though perhaps a touch more refined than other sets of late - tangerine Clickits tote bag comes to mind).
Now that's a good set
This set already being on RSOTD makes me feel so old.
@PurpleDave: thanks for the heads up. So they are the same width.
Interesting. The two widest LEGO sets are based on London locations, a real one and a fictional one. :-)
I saw this set at the Lego Store in Leipzig. My wife really liked it and we spontaneously bought it. Well, it took me out of my Dark Ages. I guess my wife didn't like the outcome that much :-)
Like the UCS Millenium falcon and UCS ISD, it’s a set I’ve always wanted but never quite been able to pull the trigger on. Something about spending hundreds on Lego just doesn’t compute. I love Tower Bridge every time I see it in person. Like the designer said in the promo video, it’s a beautiful building that just happens to be a bridge.
I think I was lucky to get this great set at a bargain price. Brand new, less than retail price and after it had been retired.
That set was my worst building experience yet, and I built quite a lot of big sets. Two and a half reasons for this:
- Over 4.000 parts in unnumbered bags, so 90 minutes of sorting before you can start building. And you need a big table. And that table stays loaded as long as you build, no easy cleanup after a part of the buildup.
- A symmetrical build. Two towers that look alike and can (or should?) be built together at the same time. Every tower has symmetrical sides itself, so the building steps are VERY repetitive.
- Over 500 1x1 cheese slopes that form columns. I still have nightmares about them.
That being said, the set has a great parts value if you want to get your hands on many parts in Tan.
Tower Bridge was the set that led to me rediscovering Lego after a long hiatus.
On a trip to London in 2011 I visited Tower Bridge and saw the Lego set. This led to an order for a Tower Bridge, next was discovering the modular buildings and Brickset and the rest is history.....
@AustinPowers:
Or Diagon Alley is the widest set and this is the longest... Actually, the interesting thing is I think Huw did a review of the Technic car carrier and speculated that it was the longest set ever produced, provided you lowered the ramp. I'd thought Diagon Alley broke that record, but it turns out the record was more than Technic could overcome.
@Tynansd:
You really are in the wrong hobby, then. Spending money is one of the biggest parts of being an AFOL.
