In addition:

  • I will remove all comments designed to bait me or other editors into senseless or repetitive arguments.
  • Anyone visiting this talk page for the purpose of complaining bitterly or perpetuating an argument is asked to take a deep breath and step away from the computer for 24 hours. If in a day, you still have an issue, you'll probably be in a much better frame of mind to discuss it rationally.
  • I will also remove any remark or remarks that seek to intimidate me or other users and I will report Wikistalking and Wikistalkers. Labelling JWs as "heretical"

edit

I did not label JWs as heretical. I said some mainline Christian religions consider them as heretical. Dtbrown 00:26, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

And I explained why that is innapropriate in the opening paragraph. It is POV pushing. See the article's talk pageLiPollis 00:28, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Would you have a suggestion on how we can note that JWs are not part of mainstream Christianity? Thanks. Dtbrown 01:04, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, find a reliable source that accuses them of that and cite in in the article text. Don't paraphrase and don't use subjective terms. All this is dealt with on the Talk Page for the article.LiPollis 01:06, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Use of CE/BCE

edit

Hi, Just spotted your edit comment at Barrow, Alaska stating that CE/BCE is the preferred standard for eras: it isn't, but Wikipedia accepts it with no preference over the normal AD/BC. The Barrow article started off using AD and that's how it should have stayed. As a compromise I've removed all notation and just linked the years. Years from 1 can stand on their own without an era notation. Cheers. 81.109.245.17 16:21, 12 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I hope it Is improved, the only thing else i would add...A talisman is something written, I removed this from the mention in the first paragraph..Talismans, (charms as well though I won't open that can of worms) are for good luck and protection and most usually written, whether this be on an amulet, paper whatever, it Does involve words and therefore can not be the same as a rope and feathers. What you might wish to stick in something does not change what it Is.

Trixie Koontz

edit

Hi, I noticed you at List of famous dogs, I added Trixie yesterday, in error, not realizing that you already had her in there in a different section. Anyway, I left a note on the Talk:Dean Koontz page on recreating the separate article on Trixie. Any thoughts or suggestions? I've never tried to debate for a previously merged article to be re-created before and I'm not sure of the steps that need to be taken. Or do you think that she should just stay merged with Dean's article?CindyBotalk 00:46, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Life Coaching article

edit

Ok I am probably doing this wrong, but being technically challenged I have struggled for 2 days trying to communicate with you and am about to call it a day. I am adding my response to your response to my first posting below. I posted it in my talk page three times before it stuck, then realized you wanted me to contact you through your talk page. That is what I am trying to do now. If this does not work, I may just repost on the main page to get your attention. I hope you get this.

Thank you for your quick response and your understanding of my rookiness. I also appreciate you efforts to find a useful and reasonable solution. I sit in the cat bird seat of knowing, for lots of reasons, what Wikipedia is trying to educate others on. But as you can imagine, I was a bit spooked. Your response has been a big help. Thanks.

Your proposal sounds very reasonable and I do have a web page that clearly discusses these four keys that I would like linked. However, I wish to remain in the spirit of "be careful not to promote any one coach over another" as the web page does encourage readers to call TCC. I'm presenting the link here for you to research (http://www.findyourcoach.com/life-coachkeys.htm) If you wish, I can create a more neutral page as part of the findyourcoach network that only includes the four keys only.

You also mentioned comparing coaching to therapy and other human improvement processes. I wrote a detailed comparison of coaching and consulting (the most frequently confused process with coaching) which you can also read at: http://www.findyourcoach.com/consultant-lifecoach.htm

I await your response, and can appreciate the typing issues as I hunt and peck along myself on a strange keyboard. ----Bill Dueease

Primarily Primates

edit

Hey Lisa, it seems there's been a vandal at the page on which we both worked so hard. I requested that the article be Protected. Just wanted to give you a heads-up. I know you left me a message on my Talk Page once a lo-o-ong time ago, but I didn't know what that page was nor how to respond at the time - LOL. Anyway, here is what I wrote in my request:

"Indefinite semi-protection is needed on the Primarily Primates article. Over the last few months, users have vandalized the article with biased, incendiary, and unsupported claims. The user contributing from IP address 67.142.130.19 reinstated his/her edits even after the Bots removed them for having been "dubious information." This repeated vandalism has undermined the diligent efforts of myself and user LiPollis to clean up this article in alignment with NPOV policy, cite sources, and add accurate references which represent both sides of a dispute. This page should be protected for a substantial length of time. Thank you."

Well, I hope something is done. You may want to visit the talk page for 67.142.130.19 and add a request to stop "contributing." I believe that if at least two people post complaints on a vandal's page, they could be banned. Take care! nycdi (talk) 11:14, 20 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

No, no, it's quite all right — as you may have gathered from a post near yours on my talk page, I'd mentioned to Bernard Baily's daughter Amy that writing the initial Wiki article on her father helped keep my mind occupied during a very bad time (helping tend my mother, who has Stage III pancreatic cancer). It's funny how shared interests and anonymity (in most cases on Wiki) open up.

If you let me know what issue of TCJ it is, I'll find a copy and, being a journalist myself, try to see if there's any encyclopedic content there; it may come down to a single line, such as, "Jane Doe claims sexual harassment in a magazine article whose allegations were disseminated widely in online fan forums, but she took no legal action and John Doe and Jane Roe responded in The Comic Street Journal that the claims had basis in fact." Or whatever the specifics are, with proper citations.

Neutral tone, addressing what's been published in a reliable-source magazine, and acknowledging the wide online dissemination — altogether, acknowledging the rationale for inclusion while stating the broad facts, after which it could be argued that details are unnecessary since the allegations were never proved. That's my suggestion, as a professional, and I'd be glad to do the legwork. Julius Schwartz deserves have a professional write this, so that it's presented in the most (and I hate that Fox News co-opted the phrase) fair and balanced way. --Tenebrae (talk) 19:02, 26 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Culture

edit

Hi, I would really appreciate it if you would look over this article. As of a few days ago, I think it was a trainwreck - tangential material, lots of repetition, no contextualization. I did a major overhaul of it (but my approach was relatively conservative: I deleted fringe material and redundancies, and reorganized what was left according to distinctive points of view or approaches). It still needs work (I describe all this in greater detail on the talk page). One thing I did was provide a very abbreviated summary of how cultural anthropologists talk about culture. One thing that is sorely lacking is a section on material culture and archeology. Off the top of my head I think that something should be said about the first appearance of tools in hominan history, how archeologists study material culture (explaining words like matrix and assemblage), theories of material culture and the relationship between material culture and social organization/social life etc. Right now I am trying to focus on the core concepts/ways of conceptualizing/frameworks for study. But I do not have the knowledge of archeology to do this. So I am hopeng that you can help out ... thanks Slrubenstein | Talk 19:37, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Cathy O'Brien

edit

Hi, Regards this edit, I still think it's inappropriate for a variety of reasons. For one, it's just Hammond's opinion. Second, phrased as is, he has distanced himself from it, meaning he no longer believes it - so it can't really be said to support O'Brien's opinions. The Greenbaum speech is itself, put politely, suspect. The speech itself does not mention O'Brien at all, meaning it can't be said to 'support' her claims at all and making the union of the two ideas original research in my mind. The satanic ritual abuse idea itself is seen as a moral panic (see [1], this whole book, the SRA page itself). The CIA mind control idea is a conspiracy theory with little to support it beyond the testimony of suspect individuals like O'Brien herself (and no actual proof). If nothing else, the entire section consists of stitching together plausible similarities between the accounts and saying it is corroboration. This is for me, a synthesis that should not be on the page.

Possible picture of Renee Fladen?

edit

Hey there, I just came across your post in the "Discussion" section for the "Walk Away Renee" (Left Banke song) entry. While it doesn't seem like there'd be any simple way to prove that the photo is indeed of the legendary Renee, I would think it's at least reasonable to post that link you provided on the main page, perhaps on the grounds that it discusses Billy Bragg's cover version. I'll go ahead and post it if you don't mind.

Let me know what you think! By the way, if that really is a picture of Renee Fladen, then you've totally struck gold, as (from my understanding) a picture of her is quite rare and a "hot commodity" these days!

re Susan Atkins

edit

Thanks for speaking up. Oh, and I'm a she. :) Wildhartlivie (talk) 02:22, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Gosh, maybe it's our generation, though I'm betting I'm probably older. I'm older than everybody these days. I've read all of the books at some point, though I can't seem to find either Child of Satan or Paul Watkins' book anymore. It's probably in some box, though I can't remember where. I've wanted to find it more than once the last couple of years. I've actually requested the King book from interlibrary loan because another editor and I need to update and better source the Sharon Tate article before someone nominated it for a featured article review. It will be coming due one of these days and we don't want it jeopardized. He worked very hard to get that FA status and I don't want him to lose it. If you haven't read that article, I recommend it. He took a lot of care to make it more than just another Manson rehash and he succeeded very well. I actually think we did a good job on the Charles Manson article too, though we'll never try to take it to GA or FA. The first thing that was said about it when we did nominate it was that it was too long, it needed to be cut. Not interested in doing that, it's comprehensive and thorough and personally, I think it's just right. The truth is, there's a lot that could be lifted and placed into the other articles if one were so inclined.
My friend was ranting earlier today about "kids" these days and how enured they are about violence in life. This was in response to an ad for the new Rob Zombie version of Halloween 2 and that his film was symbolic of everything wrong with our society. I had to laugh because we grew up on the original version and I pointed this out. She said "Yes, but they're strangling people with their own intestines, how is that going to scare kids into not putting a little hole in someone's head? That's nothing and they learn to aim with video games!!" I told her she'd gotten old this summer. But in some aspects, she's right. The whole Manson thing is 40 years old. That's older than some of the young kids' parents and it is disjointed in time and the actual horror of it has faded into history. That lessens its impact and as you noted, opens the door for the development of sympathy for mostly the "girls". Sure, they have mostly been model prisoners and earned degrees and been teachers and coaches to the other prisoners, but then, what else did they have to do? Would they have done this without being incarcerated for life? It's easy to find the path when there are no others offered. Not very reflective of my education, I suppose, but then I'm old and jaded.
Anyway, thanks for your encouragement and keep an eye on the articles! Wildhartlivie (talk) 06:52, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mike Warnke

edit

Thank you for your comments on the Mike Warnke article. The other editor has been a burr in my saddle on other articles. She is relentless in her opinion and twists the facts to suit her POV. She accuses me of doing what she is doing. I am not trying to introduce POV into the article. I am trying to back-up claims that Mr. Warnke fabricated a great deal of the history he relied on to make a living during the late 70s and early 80s. He still has a small but loyal following. They have, over the past two years, removed reference to many of these inaccuracies. If you check the change log, most of Kelly's edits have been to put her twist on the article. She has clarified a few military terms. She has also attempted to remove the distinctions that I have inserted. I am done with my edits for now, and Kelly can go joust at other windmills. Thanks again for your comments. One thing further, do you notice how she came back and told you that she wasn't the problem without taking your advice of cooling off? --Walter Görlitz (talk) 12:53, 22 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re Deleting gay references

edit

Just to say I agree that it can be frustrating to see refs to gay identity deleted, whether the person in question was out or not. Here's one I'm keeping an eye on: David I. Walsh. I was doing some work on this article and simply said Walsh never married while I went to find more detailed refernces. Someone added the fact that he was homosexual and someone else deleted that text with the note "don't need this". So now I've added a lot of material -- his homsexuality was part of quite a scandal in 1942 and even got FDR involved. Now I'm watching and waiting. I'd be happy to hear of other cases, especially historical figures, by which I mean U.S. history not Alexander the Great. Cheers. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 17:44, 4 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Lisa! Please feed me as much material as you can.

I'm afraid two of the sources can't be used for citations: The "Jew Age" Gil Kane page is just a Wikipedia mirror site. And the Bronze Age blog is just someone's personal blog who's not a recognized author in the field; we can't cite such self-published sources. However, the latter can definitely serve to provide leads that can be verified by [{WP:RS|reliable sources]]. (On a side note, I have a magazine that actually contains that Buitoni ad — I'd immediately recognized it as Gil's work.)

I do have that Alter Ego issue as a print magazine, and while I hadn't seen any specific facts in it that the Wikipedia article doesn't already contain, looking at it again, it it does have some quotes and some expanded context that I think I should add to the article.

I would have imagined that the Aventura News, the local community paper where he lived, would have had something, but its online archives don't appear to go back very far and a search there for "Gil Kane" turns up no results. Same with The Miami Herald and the South Florida Sun Sentinel. But with the two of us plugging away, we'll find more biographic stuff eventually. He must have spoken about his wives and families at some point, one would imagine. --Tenebrae (talk) 15:18, 20 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well, I might be able to help with that. Go to my user page at Tenebrae, and in the lefthand navigation bar you'll see "Email this user." I'm a journalist, so please get in touch with me. Perhaps I have an idea. --Tenebrae (talk) 15:14, 25 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Loves Pride 2014

edit

Hi Lisa. In case you are not aware, there is an upcoming campaign to improve coverage of LGBT-related topics on Wikipedia, culminating with an international edit-a-thon on June 21. See Wiki Loves Pride 2014 for more information. If you are interested, you might consider creating a page for a major city (or cities!) near you, with a list of LGBT-related articles that need to be created or improved. This would be a tremendous help to Wikipedia and coverage of LGBT culture and history. Thanks for your consideration, and please let me know if you have any questions! --Another Believer (Talk) 15:55, 9 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wallace Chafe

edit

Thanks for the thanks, but I am strictly an amateur linguist with a strong interest in Native American languages. (I can stumble thru Lakhota, and have studied Navaho, Eskimo [Inyupiaq], Ojibwe, Chickasaw, Mohawk, Naahuatl, Maya [Yucatec], Qheshwa and Guarani, taking one language from each major family.) I bought the Seneca Handbook recently, and thought it should be added to Prof. Chafe's page. If you actually studied under him, then I am very envious. I have many questions which I would love to put to a real linguist. Norm mit (talk) 18:03, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

You have certainly studied under some of the giants of native American linguistics. I have read and admired works by them, even tho it is only a hobby. My day job is writing computer programs (I have degrees in math), but I love browsing language books. Native American languages are by far my favorite because they are both exotic and very different from each other. (I mean, you learn one Bantu language or one Romance language, and you've practically learned them all.) The only languages I have studied formally are Spanish, Hebrew, Russian, Mandarin and Ancient Greek, but I have dabbled in many others.

I'm very impressed too that you did actual fieldwork in Mohawk. When I was in the city of Tiotiake for a film festival (I think the white men call it Montreal), I did a day trip to the Kahnawaake reserve south of town. I was amused that the traffic signs were all in Mohawk, with English subtitled. (No French here!) I was also impressed with the "language nests" for young children that they are using to teach Mohawk.

Another time I was in Omaha on business, and took the weekend off, driving to a nearby (4 hour) Lakhota reservation where they were having a powwow. I managed to greet a few people in Lakhota. (“Hello” amazingly is really the Hollywood word "how!", apparently taken from English, since no other words contain diphthongs.)

So, in answer to your suggestion, I would indeed be interested in your old language material and would be happy to pay shipping and handling to my home in Maryland. (Media mail!)

By the way, I have an early '70's book by Marianne WILLIAMS on Mohawk. Therefore, was that her married name or perhaps is Mithun? ("Mithun" is a word in Sanskrit/Hindi and means "pair" or "couple".)

I don't have a Facebook page, but my home page is acad.gwu.edu/~nbrenner if you want to read about me.

Thanks again for the interesting exchange, and-- Ahkwesáhsne. Norm mit (talk) 20:56, 11 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I sent an e-mail to HollyCricket@aol.com but I'm not sure you got it. So, to recap, thank you again for the generous offer of the books. I will of course pay shipping and handling and a pour-boire. Send me a list first in case I have some already, and you might want to continue offering those for sale. If you didn't get it, my phone is 301-980-6374 day/cell, and 301-229-9625 (evening). re this: I'm not removing it for now, since I certainly would like more sources myself, but you seem to be suggesting that the sources in question (and you should have seen some of the ones I decided not to use) are "fringey" merely because they believe Simpson to be innocent of the murders. Might I remind you that nearly 20 years ago the jury in the criminal trial endorsed exactly that view? By our usual standards of fringiness, belief in his guilt would be considered the fringe opinion regardless of how widespread it is. (Yes, I know, the civil jury found him liable, by a lower standard of proof).

The books I cited for Nigg's possible involvement in drug dealing in Colorado and Los Angeles were published by reliable publishers and vetted (we can assume) by their legal departments (I cited one of the other books simply because he has a rather pungent quote on how unlike a robbery Nigg's murder seemed, and not to endorse any of the more fantastic allegations). Yes, they have their conclusions. We shouldn't cast aspersions on their reliability simply for that reason. Daniel Case (talk) 18:33, 8 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

OK, thanks. I admit I didn't see it that way ... of course having material with potentially fringey sources could be seen by the people who like to promote or rely on those sources as an invitation to add them (don't worry, the article's on my watchlist (just like Death of Elisa Lam, another subject that has this issue) so I will notice if such sources are added).

I was surprised that the article got as many hits as it did ... I found out someone linked to it from Reddit as a TIL, which would explain that. Daniel Case (talk) 17:12, 9 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

The murders and the slow-speed chase happened about a week after my wife and I got married ... as luck would have it also, she's from the Buffalo area, and we were living there at the time, so the whole case got a lot of attention from the start.

I suppose this article will make more sense sometime in the future when I create the one on Brett Cantor—a young record exec and nightclub owner (Dragonfly, if that name sounds familiar)—who was murdered almost a year before Ron and Nicole. That murder (also unsolved, even today) had enough similarities (stabbed with a similar blade and similar cutting technique) to the Brown-Goldman murders that Judge Ito ruled the case file had to be turned over to the defense. And Nicole was known to frequent Dragonfly, and Ron Goldman had worked there as well (there is also supposedly a photo of him and Goldman together, smiling, suggesting that their relationship was personal as well).

But, since I'd like to wait for the 25th anniversary to put it on DYK, I won't be creating until summer after next. Daniel Case (talk) 01:18, 10 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

John Morthland

edit

Hi. While I appreciate that there may be certain references which are better in some ways than others, on the Deaths in 2016 page it is a style guideline that each subject entry has only one attached, and these must be in the format "link + headline" only, with no other formatting added. If the reference you kindly added had helped reinforce any of the facts contained in the entry on that page, such as proof of age or occupation, then it would have been better to replace the one already there. However, both references, as far as I can see, come from reputable sources, and state basically the same info, or at least enough for us to back up the entry's validity. As to the question of Morthland having his own artricle, that would be a challenge for someone to take on (perhaps yourself?), or you could go to the relevant page to request that an article be written. I am saying nothing here about his notability, as I am purely concerned with the Deaths in 2016 page, and that its content sticks to the conventions formulated over many years. Thanks. I agree with your reasoning in this diff, but ... the closest thing we have to an official policy statement on this, WP:LEADCITE, is—I would say—aggressively ambiguous on this issue. Daniel Case (talk) 06:19, 8 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Contests

edit

User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money. As someone who has previously expressed interest in African topics, would you be interested in contributing to one or assisting draw up core article/missing article lists? He says he's thinking of North Africa for an inaugural one in October. If interested please sign up in the participants section of the Contest page, thanks.♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:30, 21 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

edit

Hello, Lisapollison. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

March Madness 2017

edit

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
