'Gentry'[edit]

Whatever this man may have been, he was certainly never an Earl of Mar (either of them, as two can hold the post at the same time). Going by his surname, he may have been related to the family. The only reference I can find to him anywhere remotely reliable is here, where he is referred to as 'of Marr' rather than 'Mar'.

Due to usage, I'd be surprised if this was anything more than a territorial designation (see second-last paragraph) which can be adopted by any landowner or derived from association. In this case, it would be simply part of his name, and to suggest he was 'known' as it in addition to another name would be false. --Breadandcheese (talk) 12:00, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
