Etymology

First attested in the Worin seokbo (つきしるししゃく / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄀᆞᅀᆞᆯ (Yale: kozol)., connective form ᄀᆞᅀᆞᆶ (kozolh).

Nominalized form of ᄀᆞᆺ다 (Yale: kosta, “to cut; to sever”) (not directly attested in Middle Korean but preserved in Jeju) with the Old Korean verbal nominalizer おつ *-r, whose Middle Korean reflex is ㅀ -lh. The etymological meaning of 가을 is thus "severing" or "cutting", presumably referring to the autumn harvest.
