Etymology

Originally a compound of もと (su, abbreviation of 素晴すばらしい (subarashii, wonderful, superb)) +‎ てき (-teki, -ish, -like, adjectivizing suffix).[1][2][3][4]

First appears in the late Edo period, in the early 1800s.[1]

The use of てき (teki, enemy) instead of てき (teki, -ish, -like) is an example of phonetic ateji ().[1][2][3][5]
