First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (りゅうてん / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean  (Yale: cay). Considered to be from the same root with (jat, “castle, fortresss”), because both of them use the same hanja しろ for the hun readings in the pre-modern times.[1]
