13ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਈਸਵੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ [[ਮੱਧ ਏਸ਼ੀਆ]] ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ [[ਹਿੰਦ-ਯੂਰਪੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ]] ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਸਨ, ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ [[ਸ਼ਕ|ਸ਼ਕ]], [[ਸੋਗ਼ਦਾ|ਸੌਗਦੀਆਈ]], [[ਬੈਕਟ੍ਰਿਆ|ਬੈਕਟ੍ਰੀਆਈ]] ਵਗੈਰਾ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਸਨ। 13ਵੀਂ ਸ਼ਤਾਬਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ [[ਮੰਗੋਲ ਸਾਮਰਾਜ]] ਫੈਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਪੂਰੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਅਤੇ [[ਮੰਗੋਲ]] ਨਸਲ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਛਾ ਗਏ। ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿੰਦ-ਯੂਰਪੀ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੁਰਕੀ-ਮੰਗੋਲ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਸ਼ਰਣ ਹਨ। ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਚਗ਼ਤਾਈ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਸੰਤਾਨ ਹੈ। [[ਬਾਬਰ]] ਇਸੇ ਚਗ਼ਤਾਈ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ [[ਬਾਬਰਨਾਮਾ]] ਵੀ ਇਸੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ [[ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ]] ਵਿੱਚ [[ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ|ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ]] ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਵਿਖਾਈ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਹਿੰਦ-ਯੂਰਪੀ ਜੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਜ੍ਹਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੈ।

ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਮੂਲ ਅਜੇ ਤੱਕ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗ ਸਕਿਆ ਹੈ। ਕੁਝ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਉਗ਼ੁਜ਼ ਖ਼ਾਗਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਉਗ਼ੁਜ਼ ਬੇਗ ਵੀ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਇਆ।[15] ਕੁਝ ਲੋਕ ਇਹ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਅਜ਼ਾਦ ਜਾਂ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਹੈ, ਓਜ਼ (ਆਪ, ਖ਼ੁਦ) ਅਤੇ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਨਾਮ ਬੇਗ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਜ਼ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਉਗੁਜ਼ ਤਰਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਬੇ ਜਾਂ ਬੇਕ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਇਆ।[16]

13ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਈਸਵੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮੱਧ ਏਸ਼ੀਆ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਿੰਦ-ਯੂਰਪੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਸਨ, ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਕ, ਸੌਗਦੀਆਈ, ਬੈਕਟ੍ਰੀਆਈ ਵਗੈਰਾ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਸਨ। 13ਵੀਂ ਸ਼ਤਾਬਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਮੰਗੋਲ ਸਾਮਰਾਜ ਫੈਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਪੂਰੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੰਗੋਲ ਨਸਲ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਛਾ ਗਏ। ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿੰਦ-ਯੂਰਪੀ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੁਰਕੀ-ਮੰਗੋਲ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਸ਼ਰਣ ਹਨ। ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਚਗ਼ਤਾਈ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਸੰਤਾਨ ਹੈ। ਬਾਬਰ ਇਸੇ ਚਗ਼ਤਾਈ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਬਰਨਾਮਾ ਵੀ ਇਸੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਵਿਖਾਈ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਹਿੰਦ-ਯੂਰਪੀ ਜੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਜ੍ਹਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੈ।

ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਹੈਪਲੋਗਰੁੱਪ (R1a) ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਏਸ਼ੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਹਿੰਦ-ਯੂਰਪੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਤਰੀ ਭਾਰਤੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਰੂਸੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਇਹੀ ਹੈਪਲੋਗਰੁੱਪ ਹੈ।

ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਪੰਨਾ, ਤਾਸ਼ਕੰਤ 1911 ਦਾ।

ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਇੱਕ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਕਿ ਅੱਗੋਂ ਕਾਰਲੁਕ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਲਿਪੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਬੀ, ਲਾਤੀਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਰਿਲਿਕ ਲਿਪੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹਨ। ਸੋਵੀਅਤ ਯੂਨੀਅਨ ਤੋਂ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਸਿਰਿਲਿਕ ਲਿਪੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਲਾਤੀਨੀ ਲਿਪੀ ਨਾਲ ਬਦਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਲਈ।
