MAYILADUTHURAI: Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami formally inaugurated the newly created Mayiladuthurai district through video conferencing from Chennai on Monday.
The residents, traders, and political parties from the new district celebrated the event. They said this will bring added facilities and job opportunities for the locals, and more funds from the government. The distance to Nagapattinam from Mayiladuthurai and Kollidam made it almost inaccessible for administrative purposes.
The residents had to take a circuitous route via Nannilam to reach the headquarters of Nagapattinam.
Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami made the announcement on the creation of the new district bifurcating the Mayiladuthurai town from Nagapattinam district under 110 Rule in the assembly on March 24. As per the notification issued by the state government on December 28, 2020, the new district comprises of two revenue divisions - Mayiladuthurai and Sirkazhi, four taluks namely Mayiladuthurai, Sirkazhi, Kuthalam, and Tharangambadi, 15 blocks, and 287 revenue villages.
This was the foremost demand of the people, which was in pending for several years, the traders said. Mayiladuthurai comprised rural and semi-urban regions with a mix of traders, farmers, agriculture labourers, and fishing communities that offer a lot of scope on the economic front. By creating a new district, the potential can be utilized, they added.
