‘The Kerala Story,’ directed by Sudipto Sen, has sparked significant controversy in Kerala due to its depiction of disputed statistics and perspectives, which many critics argue are misleading. Despite the opportunity, Kani chose to reject the audition call from the director, standing by her principles.
In the interview, Kani elaborated on her decision-making process, stating, "I prefer not to star in movies that do not support my political views.” She said that she is also aware that if she doesn’t receive suitable offers, she will have to compromise.
She emphasized the importance of aligning her work with her political stance but acknowledged the practical challenges actors face in the industry.
Interestingly, Kani also discussed her involvement in the film ‘Biriyaani,’ despite its script not aligning with her politics or aesthetics. She revealed that she accepted the role because of her respect for the director, Sajin, who comes from a backward Muslim community and speaks his own political truths, which don’t reflect her own views.
